Lake Placid, NY, Jan 08, 2010 — Iraq has never sent an athlete to the Winter Olympics. Back in 2005, before the games in Torino, Italy, Brian Mann profiled skeleton sled racer Faisal Gazi Faisal, from Baghdad. Once again this year, Faisal is fighting to win a berth at next month's Winter Games in Vancouver. Nov 09, 2005 — An Iraqi sled-racer returned to Lake Placid last week to train and compete. Faisal Ghazi Faisal is hoping to qualify for the Winter Olympics this February in Torino, Italy. Jan 31, 2005 — While millions of Iraqis were voting Sunday, one of their countrymen was competing in Lake Placid. Faisal Ghazi Faisal, who grew up in Baghdad, raced in the America's cup "skeleton" sled race. The 24-year-old hopes to become the first Iraqi ever to compete in the Winter Olympic Games next year.
