NY fishing rules will extend through March

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) The state Department of Environmental Conservation says current freshwater fishing regulations will extend through the end of March 2015, with a new regulations guide available on April 1.

The change was made based upon the change to the effective dates of fishing licenses. In the past, fishing licenses, like hunting licenses, were effective October 1 thru September 30. Now, fishing licenses are effective 365 days from the date of purchase.  Go to full article

NY fishing touted in new TV tourism ads

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York's finest fishing waters from Long Island to the Thousand Islands are featured in a TV tourism ad unveiled by Gov. Andrew Cuomo over the weekend.

Cuomo was in the Finger Lakes hosting the Bassmaster Governor's Challenge on Owasco Lake while the Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament was taking place on Cayuga Lake. It was one of a series of tourism promotional events held by Cuomo around the state, which have included snowmobiling in Tug Hill and whitewater rafting in the Adirondacks.  Go to full article

4 St. Lawrence fishing tips from the Bassmasters

Today is day two of the Bassmasters Elite tournament on Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes. The event is part of the top professional series for sport bass fishing.

Despite the caliber of bass fishing in the area, many people don't know anything about the sport.

David Sommerstein rode along while the anglers were practicing last year for the tournament on the St. Lawrence River. He gathered these tips from the country's best bass fishermen.

Gov. Cuomo to host fishing tournament

OWASCO LAKE, N.Y. (AP) New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is set to welcome professional fishermen to the Finger Lakes for the Bassmaster Governor's Challenge.

The governor's office says Saturday's event at Owasco Lake is designed to promote fishing and other recreational activities in upstate New York.  Go to full article

Gunky, icky spiny water flea spreads in Adirondacks

Scientists and activists studying invasive species say the spiny water flea is spreading to more lakes in the Adirondack Park.

The organism had already been found in Great Sacandaga and Lake George. This summer, the invasive creature was found in Lake Pleasant and Piseco Lake.  Go to full article

Fisherman reels in record drum on Lake Ontario

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) A fisherman from western New York has been credited with catching a record-breaking freshwater drum in Lake Ontario.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says James VanArsdall of West Henrietta caught the fish in Irondequoit Bay in Monroe County on June 14. The fish measured 33.5 inches and weighed 26 pounds 9 ounces.  Go to full article

New York takes aim at Seneca Lake lamprey

AVON, N.Y. (AP) New York state is taking steps to control the population of parasitic sea lampreys around Seneca Lake to protect other fish species.

The state's Department of Environmental Conservation says that next week it will begin treating tributaries of Seneca Lake with a chemical that kills lamprey larva but is harmless to most other aquatic wildlife.  Go to full article

On Wellesley island, some fish are just for decoration

If you plan to go fishing on the St. Lawrence River this summer, near Wellesley Island, chances are you might buy your tackle from Lloyd Wood, or Woody. He's run a little bait and tackle shop on the Cross Island Road for more than 20 years.

But he's also known for his folk art, turning plastic soda bottles into ornamental fish that sway in the breeze around his shop. Todd Moe stopped by Woody's Bait and Tackle for today's Heard Up North.  Go to full article

New mobile app helps hunters, anglers in New York

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) A free mobile application is now available to provide up-to-date information on fishing, hunting, wildlife watching and other outdoor activities in New York state.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the launch of the "New York Fish and Wildlife" app follows last week's Tourism Summit and coincides with the start of the summer travel season.  Go to full article
