(03/07/12) Folk singer Lee Knight has spent much of his life collecting and recording traditional songs of the Adirondacks and the Appalachians. He grew up in Saranac Lake and now lives in North Carolina.

Knight returns to the North Country every now and then to continue his research. He'll be at BluSeed Studios in Saranac Lake Thursday night (7 pm) as part of TAUNY's Song and Story Swaps series. Lee joined Todd Moe in the NCPR studios this morning to share some Native American music.

(11/10/06) Contemporary singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson gives a concert this Sunday (7 pm) at the Edwards Opera House. She's been called one of the most original and influential folk artists of our time, and her music has been described as "joyful, stark, and poignant". Todd Moe has this preview.

(08/30/05) Grindstone Island is a place where the past is quite present. Grindstone is just opposite the St. Lawrence River village of Clayton. It's several miles long, one of the largest of the Thousand Islands. There are no official roads. Folks get around in old jalopies or ATVs. Only 11 people live on Grindstone all winter, but when the weather changes, families who've spent generations of summers there return, and a larger community reassembles. On Saturday nights, the place to be is the big dance at Dodge Hall. Usually it's DJs or rock 'n' roll bands who supply the music. But every once in a while, some fiddlers and callers get together for an old-fashioned square dance. David Sommerstein joined in a couple of weekends ago, and sent this audio postcard.

(04/05/02) We preview an afternoon of Quebecois music and celebration. Frog Bridge joins Todd Moe in the studio. The North Country ensemble joins the Quebec-based group "Entourloupe" Sunday afternoon at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton for workshops, music and family dances.

(01/10/00) Vic Kibler continues a strong musical tradition in the southern Adirondacks, performing many old-standard jigs, reels, and hornpipes he got from his family. Vic's youngest son, Paul, worked with him in 1992 to produce a collection recognized as an outstanding folk recording by the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress.
