Last inmate leaves Camp Gabriels

Breaking: It's official ? Camp Gabriels to close July 1st

New York state officials made it official today, announcing that Camp Gabriels near Saranac Lake will close on the first of July. Chris Knight will have details during All Before Five and again on tomorrow's Eight O'Clock Hour

Here is the official statement:

The Department of Correctional Services plans to close Camps Pharsalia, Gabriels and Mt. McGregor on July 1, 2009 or as soon after as practicable in accordance with the enacted 2009-10 State Budget. DOCS also intends to vacate the annexes at Eastern, Green Haven, Groveland, Lakeview, Sullivan and Washington Correctional Facilities, as well as the minimum portion of Butler Correctional Facility, on or about October 1, 2009, though the Department will continue to maintain the annex buildings. The medium-security portion of Mt. McGregor Correctional Facility will remain open. The new State Budget assumes savings from the closures. On April 14, 2009, Commissioner Brian Fischer notified staff of the closure plans in letters to camp and annex employees.  Go to full article

North Country braces for loss of corrections camps and jobs

Governor David Paterson has ordered the state Department of Correctional services to cut more than 2,000 jobs statewide. According to a letter sent to state agencies, the lay-offs will begin by July. Martha Foley has more.  Go to full article

Budget deal a mixed bag for Adirondacks

Leaders scheme to keep prison open

Local leaders working keep the Camp Gabriels prison viable are pushing proposals to add educational opportunities and expand addiction treatment at the prison. Camp Gabriels will remain open

There's news of one local detail in the state budget. Camp Gabriels, which had been slated for closure under a Spitzer administration plan to streamline the state prison system, will be funded in this year's state budget and will remain open. An aide to state Senator Betty Little tells the Plattsburgh Press Republican there's a commitment from new Gov. David Paterson that Camp Gabriels will be funded in the 2008-2009 state budget. At least 130 jobs are at stake. The Spitzer decision to close Camp Gabriels, near Paul Smiths, had prompted union rallies in January. Chris Knight has more.  Go to full article

As NY prison populations shrink, job worries hit the North Country

Prison populations are booming across the United States, with one notable exception: Here in New York State the number of inmates has dropped each year since 1999, thanks in large part to a huge drop in the number of low-level offenders behind bars. Those empty jail beds have even led Governor Spitzer to push for the closure of four prisons -- including Camp Gabriels near Saranac Lake. Prisons to close in Franklin, Saratoga Counties

The Spitzer administration announced on Friday plans to close four New York prisons, including two in the North Country. Camp McGregor in Saratoga County and Camp Gabriels north of Saranac Lake, both minimum security facilities, are both slated to close in 2009. At least 130 jobs will be lost in Franklin County alone.
