(03/28/12) NCPR's occasional series on North Country entrepreneurs continues, with Aaron Reardon. Reardon's a young guy, and a hard-nosed businessman. He started his first online business in college, and in June of 2007 he opened a bricks-and-mortar business: A gaming store in Canton called "Gamer Craze."

In the last five years, Gamer Craze has moved to a bigger space, opened and closed a second store in Potsdam, and shifted much of its business from traditional video games to a collectable trading card game called Magic: The Gathering. It's done well, and Reardon's now looking for a bigger space.

Gamer Craze is one of just a few bricks-and-mortar shops in the North Country where players can come to buy what they need and they can play, too: Reardon keeps tables set up for gaming, and sells snacks. As Nora Flaherty found when she talked with Aaron Reardon, much of the store's success has come from making it a place to hang out.

(01/20/12) A plan to build the largest convention center in the nation was the centerpiece of Governor Andrew Cuomo's State of the State speech. Since then the plan has met with mixed reviews and the governor admits he has more selling to do. In Albany, Karen DeWitt reports. more

(01/13/12) One of the main planks in Governor Cuomo's State of the State address was the legalization of casinos in New York. Expanding gaming to non-Native casinos would require an amendment to the state Constitution. That's a long political process, and could add to the mix of lobbying money flowing into Albany. (11/18/10) The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe says it's "at an impasse" in talks with New York over sharing the revenue from the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino near Massena. The tribe says it's paid more than $50 million to the state, St. Lawrence and Franklin counties, and four north Country towns since 2005 under the Mohawks' gaming compact.

But those payments stopped last month when the tribe claimed New York violated an exclusivity clause in the compact by allowing slot machines on a little native territory in Clinton County. David Sommerstein reports. more

(01/15/08) The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is suing the federal government over its decision against a Mohawk casino in the Catskills. The Department of the Interior ruled earlier this month that the site is too far from the Akwesasne Mohawk reservation near Massena. David Sommerstein reports.

(11/04/05) The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is changing its plans for a casino in the Catskills again. In a letter to the federal government, two of three tribal chiefs said they are abandoning a gaming project at Kutcher's resort in favor of another one they had left behind five years ago. (05/04/05) New York's highest court has ruled that a state plan to expand video lottery terminals and Indian-owned casinos is constitutional, and can proceed. Karen DeWitt reports.
