Poll: Discontent With Sweeney, GOP
Nov 06, 2006 — Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand's narrow 3-point advantage is within the poll's margin of error. According to Siena College, Gillibrand leads Republican John Sweeney by 9 points in southern counties of the 20th congressional district and is running dead even here in the North Country. The two candidates hold equal support among men and women. The poll was taken last week just as the first news of the Sweeneys' domestic incident was coming out. Nov 02, 2006 — The 20th congressional district race was rocked yesterday when two newspapers published reports of a domestic incident in December involving Republican incumbent John Sweeney and his wife Gaia, who goes by the name Gayle. The Albany Times-Union and the New York Daily News reported that Sweeney allegedly grabbed his wife by the neck. Sweeney refuses to debate Gillibrand
Oct 26, 2006 — Former President Bill Clinton will campaign in Latham today, stumping for Democratic challenger Kirsten Gillibrand. Gillibrand hopes to unseat incumbent Republican John Sweeney. The Glens Falls Post Star had scheduled a debate between the two candidates for this evening. But Sweeney announced this week that he wouldn't face Gillibrand. Sweeney also failed to appear at a debate on Monday held by the League of Women Voters in Saratoga County. Gillibrand took to the stage alone, addressing a small audience.
