May 10, 2013 — E.J. Noble Hospital is trying to get its financial footing after a tough year. The Gouverneur-based hospital was forced to shut down last fall by the state health department, because of safety problems in the lab. The troubles stemmed from a lack of resources.

Now EJ Noble has a new hospital board, and a new CEO, and it's making decisions to improve the bottom line, including closing two rural clinics.  Go to full article

Oct 31, 2012 — E.J. Noble Hospital in Gouverneur reopened many of its services this week, after the New York State Health Department forced the Hospital to close down last month, saying the laboratory posed an imminent risk to patient health and safety.

Hospital Administrator Charles Canole says the hospital has been fixing the problems. He says it has hired a new medical director and a new lab supervisor. And it has also updated policies and procedures.  Go to full article

Aug 22, 2012 — St. Lawrence County Sheriff's investigators arrested former Gouverneur Mayor Christopher Miller Tuesday. The Watertown Daily Times reports he was charged with a felony count of third-degree grand larceny. Miller resigned from his position as mayor last Wednesday. The newspaper reports that he's accused of drawing up a fraudulent contract for the sale of a house he only partially owned.

He reportedly sold the house for $50,000, but allegedly failed to tell the people he sold it do that he was a joint owner. Deputies told the newspaper that Miller did not have the right to sell the property. The Times reports that the buyers gave Miller $10,000 as a down payment on the house, but a written agreement drawn up by Miller, gave them credit for only $1,000 dollars.

Miller was brought to the town court in Canton and was released under probation supervision. He resigned as mayor after a discussion last week with then deputy Mayor Ronald McDougall. McDougall read Miller's resignation letter at the village Board of Trustees meeting last night.

Julie Grant spoke with McDougall Wednesday morning, and asked him if he encouraged Miller to resign last week because he was about to be arrested.  Go to full article

Aug 16, 2012 — Christopher Miller resigned as village mayor of Gouverneur, N.Y., Wednesday afternoon. Deputy Mayor Ronald McDougall told multiple news sources that the two met Wednesday to discuss Miller's job, and agreed he should step down.

After Miller was elected last fall, village residents learned he was a convicted felon, for drug possession and forgery. He had also pleaded guilty to petit larceny and criminal trespass, and was on probation.  Go to full article

Aug 17, 2010 — Republican candidates for the 23rd Congressional district seat are making late summer pushes toward a September primary. Alexandria Bay businessman Matt Doheny has shored up support from the GOP establishment. All of the party's county chairs have endorsed him. Tea Party insurgent Doug Hoffman says he relishes the outsider status, just as he did in last year's special election that brought him to within a few percentage points of Democrat and Congressman Bill Owens. Hoffman trails Doheny significantly in fundraising. Lacking the get-out-the-vote infrastructure of a major party, Hoffman will need a big grassroots push to win.
