Preview: "The New York Idea" in Canton

The Grasse River Players' winter production of The New York Idea opens in Canton Thursday night as part of the annual Winterfest. Todd Moe talks with Libby Brandt and Carole Berard, two long-time members of Canton's community theater group, about the show.

The drawing room comedy was a Broadway hit back in 1906. It's been updated for modern ears by David Auburn. The play offers a slice of Manhattan's upper crust and tackles social change and those who can and cannot adapt. Carole and Libby talk with Todd about the joys of community theater and this latest production, starting with the play's opening scene.  Go to full article

Preview: "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom"

The Grasse River Players fall production opens Thursday night (7:30) in Canton and includes a cast of more than a dozen youngsters from three area school districts. There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom is based on Louis Sachar's book that's found on many middle school reading lists. The plot involves Bradley, a troubled fifth grader; his school counselor, Carla and classmate Jeff, and how they tackle some of the mysteries of growing up: friendship, self-esteem and respect for others.

Todd Moe spoke with three young actors and their director, Karen Wells, who says that although the cast is mostly tweens, the play has a message for adults, too.  Go to full article

Preview: "Doubt - a Parable" in Potsdam

Canton's community theater group, The Grasse River Players, has teamed up with the Clarkson Theatre Company for their fall production this weekend. Doubt, A Parable opens Friday night (8 pm) in the Snell Hall auditorium in downtown Potsdam. Set in 1964, the award-winning play tells the story of Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principle, in her pursuit of truth and justice regarding Father Flynn and the suspicious relationship he has formed with one of his students. More than a "Did he do it?", the play examines religion, morality, certainty and gender. Todd Moe, who plays Father Flynn, spoke with the three other cast members and the director after a recent rehearsal.  Go to full article

Preview: "Enchanted April" in Canton

Some of the members of Canton's community theater troupe stopped by to talk about their upcoming winter production, Enchanted April. With settings in London, on trains and an Italian villa, the show is a new incarnation of an old-fashioned romantic comedy. Preview: Arsenic and Old Lace

As part of Canton's "Winterfest 2007" the Grasse River Players will present a dinner theatre production of Arsenic and Old Lace at the First Presbyterian Church, Thursday through Saturday, February 15-17. Preview: Red, Hot & Cole in Canton

As part of Winterfest 2005, the Grasse River Players will present Red, Hot & Cole, a dinner theater musical production at The Glass Onion next week, February 10th-13. The show is set in the 1930s, at a party thrown by Elsa Maxwell for Cole Porter and several well known show business characters, and includes those great Porter songs. Preview: Fiddler on the Roof Comes to Canton

The Grasse River Players' presentation of the musical Fiddler on the Roof opens Thursday night, July 22nd (8 pm) in the auditorium of Canton's high school. Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevye, a Jewish milk man (and father of five), living in a small Russian town in the early 20th century.
