North Country law enforcement trains for shooting incidents

Police and emergency personnel gathered in Lake Placid last week to learn some critical skills and techniques for responding to an active shooting incident.

Law enforcement agencies from across the North Country took part in the training sessions, which were held at the former W. Alton Jones Cell Science Center in Lake Placid. Participants included members of New York State Police; the Essex, Clinton and Franklin County sheriff's departments; Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid police departments; and state environmental conservation officers and forest rangers.  Go to full article

How will new laws affect North Country gun dealers?

This week we're looking closely at some of the consequences of New York's new gun control law.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls the law's provisions "common sense." It closes loopholes in the state's assault weapons ban and limits magazine clips to seven bullets; background checks will now be required for ammunition purchases; and for private sale of guns, and there will be stiffer penalties for using illegal weapons.

Gun buyers and gun sellers are giving the rules a close read. In the North Country, buying a gun doesn't always mean heading to a big box store like Gander Mountain or Dick's. The region is home to over 200 smaller gun retailers, many of which are adjusting to the new laws.  Go to full article

Will gun owners go along with NY's tough new law?

The New York State Police held informational meetings with gun owners and dealers yesterday around the state. The meetings were designed to answer questions about how New York's tough new gun control law will be implemented.

That law, signed by Governor Cuomo earlier this month, includes strict regulation of assault rifles, closer tracking of gun sales, and a phased-in ban of high-capacity ammunition magazines.

At a meeting in Lake Placid, gun owners from the North Country asked for clarification about how the rules would affect their gun collections.

But they also expressed frustration, anger and defiance.  Go to full article

Gun deal is close in Albany

Saratoga gun show a flashpoint in weapons ban debate

Vice President Joe Biden is expected to deliver a comprehensive package of gun control recommendations to President Barack Obama tomorrow. According to The Associated Press, Senators plan to introduce a bill that would ban assault weapons and limit the size of ammunition magazines, but the head of the National Rifle Association and at least one senator say Congress is unlikely to pass it.

The measures come in the wake of the school shooting in Connecticut that killed 27 people. They're part of a renewed consideration, nationwide, of gun control regulations.

Roughly 200 protesters turned up over the weekend at a gun show in Saratoga Springs that became a flash point in the debate.

The show on Saturday at the Saratoga City Center has gone on for three decades, but it drew new publicity after the school shooting in Newtown.  Go to full article

No timeline for gun ban agreement

Governor Cuomo dampened expectations for a quick settlement on a package of gun control bills, saying he does not have a timeline for agreement with the legislature.

The governor says he's still pushing, but one day after legislative leaders said they believed a deal was "achievable" and could come this week, Governor Cuomo now says there is no timeline, for "when or if" a deal on anti gun measures will be reached.  Go to full article

Cuomo: strengthen federal gun laws, close state loopholes

Governor Cuomo says federal gun laws need to be strengthened, and he says New York State's assault weapons ban has loopholes that need to be closed.

Governor Cuomo says the state already has some of the toughest anti-gun laws in the nation, so the focus should really be on the strengthening of federal laws, where a ban on assault weapons was allowed to lapse in 2004. But he says the state's assault weapons ban should be tightened, too. For instance, the semi-automatic weapon used in the Newtown shootings is legal in New York.  Go to full article
