Leadership shuffle at Adirondack Museum
(12/02/10) The Adirondack Museum will soon look for new leadership. Longtime Executive Director Caroline Welsh has stepped aside to become senior art historian at the Blue Mt. Lake museum. Interim Director Michael Lombardi says a national search for her successor will begin soon.

Counties fear squeeze of state mandates, tax cap
The state is in a real hole here and the counties have no interest in them simply passing the hole on to us.
(11/09/10) If Albany approves a cap on property tax increases this winter, counties in the North Country could find themselves squeezed tighter than ever before.

They already facing rising demand for government services, at a time when costs for pensions, insurance, and fuel are also going up.

And the state pays less and less each year to cover the costs of programs that are mandated by New York's legislature.

With revenues already slipping in many counties, a property tax cap could push them deep into the red. Brian Mann has our story. more

He uses the objects people make, use and leave behind to tell stories about the life and times of the region. NCPR is collaborating with Andy and his sources at the Adirondack Museum and other historical associations and museums in the region to bring these stories to air. Today, we hear the story of a knife and a 19th century murder in Hamilton County.

APA approves Brandreth Lake housing plan
(06/12/09) A key Adirondack Park Agency committee has approved plans for a large scale residential development on a remote Adirondack lake. The APA's Regulatory Programs Committee signed off yesterday on the Brandreth Lake Association's plan to build 44 homes on more than 400 acres at the northern end of the lake, located in Hamilton County. Environmental groups were divided over the project. Chris Knight reports.

Four dead, three injured at group home fire in Hamilton County
(03/23/09) Four elderly residents died at a group home in Hamilton County on Saturday following an early morning fire. The blaze struck the Riverview home in the town of Wells, which is operated by New York state. Two staff members and a fifth patient were also injured. Brian Mann has our story.

Search continues for missing hiker in Adirondacks
(10/20/08) Forest rangers and volunteers are expected to continue their search today for 71-year-old man missing for more than a week in the Central Adirondacks. Frederick Gillingham of California, who has a camp in Indian Lake, has been missing since Sunday, October 12. As Chris Knight reports, the Department of Environmental Conservation is now looking for information from anyone who may have been hiking in the Indian Lake area last week.

Raquette Lake lodge project sparks praise, debate
(04/28/08) Economic development officials in Hamilton County say they're thrilled with a plan to build a new twenty-room inn on the shore of Raquette Lake. But the $4-million project has drawn criticism from neighbors, including the owner of a nearby girls' camp. Jacob Resneck attended a hearing on the project held in Long Lake on Friday. He sent this report.
