Search continues for missing hiker in Adirondacks

Forest rangers and volunteers are expected to continue their search today for 71-year-old man missing for more than a week in the Central Adirondacks. Frederick Gillingham of California, who has a camp in Indian Lake, has been missing since Sunday, October 12. As Chris Knight reports, the Department of Environmental Conservation is now looking for information from anyone who may have been hiking in the Indian Lake area last week.  Go to full article

Raquette Lake lodge project sparks praise, debate

Economic development officials in Hamilton County say they're thrilled with a plan to build a new twenty-room inn on the shore of Raquette Lake. But the $4-million project has drawn criticism from neighbors, including the owner of a nearby girls' camp. Jacob Resneck attended a hearing on the project held in Long Lake on Friday. Hamilton County bucks Democratic tide

Hamilton County, in the central Adirondacks, voted a straight Republican ticket last Tuesday. It was one of only two counties in the state to do so. The other was rural Wyoming County, south of Rochester. The rest of New York -- and even much of the North Country -- voted staunchly Democratic. Oak Mt. Ski Area May Not Open

Hamilton County officials say they're trying to help a privately-owned ski area open for the winter season. Oak Mountain employed dozens of local workers. Fight Against Deer Disease Expands To North Country

State scientists will begin testing wild deer in Hamilton county, looking for cases of chronic wasting disease. Environment officials say a captive herd that operated in Arietta in the mid-90s may have been the source of infection that spread to deer in Oneida county. Hamilton County Confirms SARS Case

Officials are confirming a suspected case of sudden acute respiratory syndrome in Hamilton County. It's the fourth SARs case identified in the North Country. As Brian Mann reports, health officials say all the patients have recovered and there's no public risk.  Go to full article

Study: Upstate Prisons Provide Little Economic Bounce

A new study released by the Sentencing Project, a Washington-based think tank, says prisons offer little long-term economic benefit to rural communities. The group analyzed income and unemployment data in 14 rural, upstate counties over 25 years. Their findings suggest that counties without prisons have actually done better economically than counties with prisons. Hunter?s Body Found Near Inlet

The search for a missing hunter in Hamilton County ended Wednesday afternoon, after three grueling days. Despite a foot of fresh snow and sub-zero temperatures, rescue workers located the body of 58-year-old Arthur Birchmeyer. The Syracuse man disappeared on Saturday in a remote area of the cemtral Adirondacks. As Brian Mann reports, forest rangers suspect that Birchmeyer died of hypothermia or natural causes.  Go to full article
