We've talked about everything from Canada's social safety net to immigration to public sector jobs. Brian's back home this morning in New York and he joined Martha Foley on the line to talk about the range of economic and public policy ideas being tested north of the border.

Parliament resumes after Olympic break

(03/04/10) Canada's Parliament got an unexpected break in late December when its session was suspended by Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Harper wanted to resume work after the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Critics complained he was just evading questions about possible mistreatment of Afghan detainees.

The suspension sparked nation-wide protests in January and the whole controversy may have cost conservatives their lead in opinion polls.

Parliament opened yesterday afternoon, with the Governor General's traditional speech from the throne. Lucy Martin has more. more

Canadians welcome Obama visit
(02/16/09) Many Canadians were pleased when newly-inaugurated President Barack Obama announced his first foreign visit would bring him to Ottawa, on February 19th. Right now the economy is the main concern on both sides of the border. With one-tenth the population of the U.S., Canada shed 129,000 jobs in January alone. And figures for December show Canada recording its first trade deficit in over 30 years. Trade and border concerns will top a host of pressing issues when Prime Minister Stephen Harper hosts Obama's quick visit this Thursday. Ottawa correspondent Lucy Martin took a quick survey of expectations on the street.

Little changes as Canada votes
(10/15/08) On November 4, Americans will make their picks for the presidential ticket, members of the House and some Senators, plus state and local contests. U.S. voters are often faced with ballot initiatives too. Voters across Canada yesterday were only making one direct choice: a single vote for their local member of Parliament. But it was a vote to determine the next prime minister. Conservatives won enough of those races to return Stephen Harper to the post But Harper still fell short of the 155 seats needed to form a majority government. Ottawa correspondent Lucy Martin has more.

Canadian Conservatives release platform
(10/08/08) In last week's leadership debates in Canada, rival parties criticized Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper for not yet presenting his party's election platform. That platform was released yesterday, one week before election day on October 14. Martha Foley has more.

Canada to Pull Out of Kyoto?
(01/30/06) Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin's Liberal party has gone down to defeat in the country's national election. The Conservative party, under leader Stephen Harper, will form the next government. The Great Lakes Radio Consortium's Dan Karpenchuk reports... there is some concern among environmental groups that Harper will pull out of the Kyoto Protocol.
