Heard Up North: An Old-Fashioned Corn Harvester

Here's a family tradition that combines the harvest and Halloween seasons. Roger and Ann Huntley of Pierrepont own a mechanical corn harvester from the early 1900s, and it still works. They brought their granddaughters out to the cornfield to make corn bundles for Halloween decorations, and for today's Heard Up North.  Go to full article

A passion for local food

A couple of food experts from Vermont will visit the North Country this week. Vermont chef and food historian Amy Trubek, and Vermont Fresh Network Director Meghan Sheradin will speak at GardenShare's annual Local Harvest Dinner in Parishville this Friday night. Both are passionate about bringing locally produced food into homes and restaurants. Todd Moe spoke with them about the pleasures of producing and consuming locally grown foods. Amy Trubek is also an anthropologist who teaches courses about food and culture at UVM. She moved to Vermont 13 years ago and says people are rediscovering the benefits of buying local food.  Go to full article

In praise of sauerkraut

Sometimes there are foods and food preparation that leave you wondering: how'd they come up with that idea? Take sauerkraut, or "sour cabbage", as an example. Farmers and gardeners hundreds of years ago probably didn't fully understand many of the reasons they made sauerkraut, the chemical reactions and fermentation, but they knew it was a good way of preserving their cabbage through the winter. Sauerkraut, love it or leave it, is chock full of vitamins. Making it is relatively easy. It's cabbage, salt and time. Todd Moe visited a sauerkraut session in Canton and found that this old cuisine is winning new fans.  Go to full article

Farmers Deal With More Rain

Farmers across the state are enduring one of the wettest Octobers on record. It should be a busy time on farms. But this fall, crops from soybeans to onions are still left in soggy fields. Gregory Warner spoke with agronomist Pete Barney of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County. He said there are some bright spots, and lots of problems.  Go to full article

For Jamaican Apple Pickers, Hurricane Ivan Hit Home

One month ago, Hurricane Ivan slammed into the island of Jamaica, ripping apart houses and knocking out phone lines and electricity. The storm hit just as hundreds of Jamaican workers were arriving in the Champlain Valley to help with the fall apple harvest. These last weeks, the men have struggled to support their families while far from home. As Brian Mann reports, this has been a season of worry, but also a season of faith.

Apples Alone Not Enough For Many Orchard Owners

The fall season brings with it celebrations of the harvest. Pumpkins and gourds show up at the grocery store. And for many families, fall means a trip to the apple orchard. Garden Farewell
