Mar 31, 2011 — Forest rangers in the Adirondacks have found the body of a Central New York woman who went missing last Friday. 44-year-old Kerry Young was found near the town of Inlet yesterday, following a two-day search that involved helicopters and more than fifty people. Old Forge, NY, Oct 06, 2010 — A New Jersey woman spent most of this summer paddling from the Adirondacks to Maine. Cathy Mumford is the first woman to solo through-paddle the entire 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail. During her 62-day kayak odyssey she passed through 22 rivers and streams, 56 miles of lakes, 55 miles of portages in 62 carries and three national wildlife refuges. The trail crosses northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Quebec. NFCT officials say fewer than 30 paddlers have completed the full length of water trail in a single trip, since it was completed in 2006. Mumford grew up along the shores of a reservoir in Colts Neck, New Jersey. With her children grown, and after being laid off from her job, Mumford wanted to take a long-distance kayak trip that would allow for some soul-searching. Now, she plans to share the challenge of wilderness tripping with young women, and write about her experiences. Todd Moe spoke with Mumford about the summer trek, celebrating her 50th birthday on the water and relying on her 9-foot plastic kayak, nicknamed "Sparky".  Go to full article

Old Forge, NY, Sep 28, 2010 — An Old Forge couple spent most of this spring and summer outdoors. Catherine and Ryan Thompson paddled the Northern Forest Canoe Trail from Old Forge to Maine, and then hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. They began the nearly 3,000 mile journey from the Adirondacks to Georgia, by canoe and foot, in April. They finished their trek last Thursday. This was their fourth backpacking adventure together. Aug 09, 2010 — It's been a classic summer so far, with plenty of sunshine and hot days. Our Adirondack bureau chief, Brian Mann, has been taking advantage of the weather, paddling and climbing.

Brian's latest favorite discovery is Crane Mountain, in Warren County, which offers a short, fun hike along with fantastic views.

But the real prize is a gorgeous mountain pond located near the summit. Brian visited recently with his son Nicholas and sent this audio postcard.  Go to full article

A new guidebook published this summer offers a great list of trails in the Adirondacks that are dog-friendly, along with good advice for taking your pet into the woods. Sep 16, 2009 — The Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club wraps up its first season of hikes introducing kids to mountains and trails. It's a high-tech, busy world, and organizers would like more families to move from desktop to mountaintop. Family excursions this summer included hikes along beginner mountain trails -- day trips into the outdoors with youngsters in mind. Jul 27, 2009 — For nearly 20 years, volunteer Summit Stewards have greeted visitors on Adirondack mountaintops. During the hiking season they work alone or in pairs maintaining trails and keeping track of visitors. Todd Moe recently climbed Mount Arab, near Tupper Lake, with a group from the Adirondack Mountain Club. At the summit and fire tower, he talked to Eric Sammis, a SUNY-Potsdam student, who's spending five weeks on Arab as part an Environmental Studies degree.
