The service features traditional Christmas carols and special music by the Laurentian Singers, the University Chorus and a Community Children's Chorus. A tradition of giving in Canton continues

A holiday tradition that's provided toys and clothing for needy families in the Canton area for decades continues this season. The Angel Tree tags, organized by the Canton Church and Community Program, are available on Christmas trees at local businesses, participating churches in Canton and the St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton student centers. Over 250 children in Canton, Hermon, Clare, Dekalb, Russell and Rensselaer Falls will be served.

Organizer Pat Alden says, like similar programs in other communities, taking and fulfilling an Angel Tree tag helps provide a much brighter holiday for area children. Anyone looking for a tag can call Pat at 854-8130.  Go to full article

Three Sisters Soup: Thanksgiving at Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons

Thanksgiving is celebrated in Canada and the U.S.

In Canada,Thanksgiving comes in October and is more of a harvest festival, without any stories about pilgrims and Indians sitting down to feast together. Even so, across North America, early European settlers improved their chances of survival by learning about native foods and techniques.

Last month Ottawa correspondent Lucy Martin was in the Georgian Bay region of Ontario where she visited Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons. The historic site re-creates a Jesuit mission established in 1639, as an outpost of New France. She spoke with costumed interpreter JoŽl Mayotte while he served "three sisters" soup to visitors on Canada's Thanksgiving weekend.  Go to full article
