Jan 20, 2009 — The largest healthcare provider in Ticonderoga is slashing fifteen jobs and cutting six more positions back to part-time. Inter-Lakes healthcare made the announcement yesterday, citing "unprecedented financial challenges" at Moses-Ludington Hospital and the Heritage Commons nursing home. Ticonderoga, NY, Jan 19, 2009 — Officials at Inter-Lakes Healthcare in Ticonderoga say 15 full-time workers at Moses Ludington Hospital will lose their jobs. "The worsening economy, lower health-care reimbursements and the pending state budget cuts are resulting in significant decreases in our revenue, and forcing us to make some very difficult decisions." said CEO Kevin Haughney, in a prepared statement.

"These decisions were extremely difficult, but absolutely necessary in order to help ensure the long-term survival of our organization and the critically important services we provide to our community."

The move comes as hospitals and nursing homes across the region brace for cuts in state aid. The decision also comes less than a month after Inter-Lakes abruptly dismissed former CEO Roger Masse. Inter-Lakes also operates a nursing home and a dental clinic.  Go to full article

Jan 07, 2009 — The Glens Falls Post-Star is reporting this morning that Governor Paterson could unveil a new rural healthcare initiative in the Adirondack Park today as part of his State of the State address. But the Governor is also expected to push for nearly a billion dollars in cuts to Medicaid reimbursements for hospitals and nursing homes statewide. That plan would cost the Uihlein nursing and rehabilitation facility in Lake Placid roughly a quarter million dollars in state aid. Apr 17, 2007 — In the Adirondacks, a coalition of health care providers, insurance companies, businesses and government agencies is working to help more locals find insurance coverage. Over the last five years, they've cut the number of uninsured in the Tri-Lakes area by 25%. But as Brian Mann reports, leaders of the effort say the goal is universal coverage.

Mar 08, 2007 — Investigations have begun into substandard conditions at Walter Reed Hospital. Many of America's injured soldiers, including National Guardsmen and servicemen from Fort Drum, are treated at the facility. The Washington Post has reported that some outpatient dormitories at the hospital were filthy and infested with vermin. Democratic Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand toured Walter Reed yesterday. Sep 11, 2006 — Providing health care to Amish communities poses unique challenges. So unique that the subject will have its own breakout session this week at the 5th Annual Conference on Rural Health. The conference starts today in Chatauqua.
Melissa Thomas is a social worker with the Community Outreach of Ohio Health. 10 years ago she got a grant to do breast cancer screenings in the Appalachian area of Ohio. She realized that Amish women weren't showing up at the mammogram clinics. So she got a mobile booth to come to them. As she told Gregory Warner, that still wasn't enough.  Go to full article

Aug 29, 2006 — This month the Fireman's Association of New York State gave their inaugural award for emergency services to the Keeseville Fire Department. The award was for a rescue last March at the Ausable Chasm. The volunteer firefighters thought they were going to a dead-on-the-scene scenario but when they climbed down the chasm in treacherous conditions they found the person was alive. They rescued the man, Dr. Charles Delise. Gregory Warner spoke with Chief Lenny Martin, one of the rescuers.  Go to full article

Jul 06, 2006 — The StoryCorps booth opens at the Canton village green this morning. StoryCorps helps people set down a record of their lives - the little details as well as the broader, deeper strokes.
Lots of reasons to do that, of course. With permission, the interviews are archived in the Library of Congress. Some are excerpted on public radio. But it's the personal archive that's most meaningful - the voices and memories that may fade, particularly after death. Zelda Foster was an early pioneer in hospice and end-of-life care. For 40 years she fought for people's right to die with dignity. She believed in facing death with honesty and preparedness. For Zelda Foster that also meant recording her story at a StoryCorps booth.
