With GOP primary near, Stefanik cries foul

The race for the North Country's congressional seat has simplified a bit in recent weeks. Democrat Aaron Woolf, a seasonal resident of Elizabethtown, and Green Party candidate Matt Funiciello, from Glens Falls, will both run unopposed after their primary opponents failed to qualify for the ballot.

But on the Republican side, the primary battle is more complicated and more bitter than ever. Elise Stefanik, a long-time seasonal resident of Willsboro who moved to the North Country last year. and Watertown businessman Matt Doheny, have been trading barbs and accusations.  Go to full article

In tough political climate, Rep. Scott Murphy argues for a second term

Representative Scott Murphy toured the North Country yesterday, visiting Lake Placid, Keene and North Hudson.

Murphy is a Democrat from Glens Falls who represents the 20th district. He's running hard to win a first full term in congress.

He faces Republican challenger Chris Gibson, a former Army colonel from Columbia County.

In 23rd race, Hoffman and Owens haven't disclosed financial ties

John McHugh has been confirmed as Army Secretary. That means the battle for his North Country House seat is shifting into overdrive. One of the most contentious issues in this special election is the financial background of the three candidates. Republican Dede Scozzafava has faced intense scrutiny for her investments in Wisebuys and Hacketts. Conservative Hoffman says he can beat Republican Scozzafava

On Friday, Conservative Party officials named Doug Hoffman as their candidate in the 23rd congressional district race. Hoffman is an accountant from Lake Placid with offices across the North Country. He won the Conservative Party nomination after failing to win support from Republican leaders last month.
