14-year-old Quebec girl dies in Adirondack bus crash

The victim of a fatal bus accident in Essex County on Friday has been identified as 14-year-old Chelssy Mercier from Quebec.

State Police say Mercier died when the tourist bus overturned in North Hudson while traveling from Quebec to New York City with 55 passengers. Officials say Mercier's mother was also aboard the bus.

There's no word yet on what may have caused the accident. According to police, the bus operated by a company called Autobus Fleur de Lys entered the median and flipped over.

Passersby tried to help Mercier, who was trapped under the bus, and State Police also attempted to revive the girl, but she died at the scene.  Go to full article

Park agency reviews cell phone plans

It's more than seven months since the Adirondack Park Agency approved the first of a series of cell towers Verizon wants to build along the Northway, but the company still hasn't started construction. Spitzer: No interim cell towers on I-87

Governor Spitzer says the state won't allow temporary cell phone towers on the Northway. The decision issued yesterday follows two deaths this winter that some critics blame at least in part on the lack of cell phone service. Northway Checkpoint Draws More Criticism

Two Republican congressmen from northern New York say the U.S. Border Patrol isn't moving quickly enough to correct "flaws" at an immigration checkpoint on I-87. NTSB: Traffic Warnings at I87 Checkpoint "Ineffective"

The National Transportation Safety Board says safety measures at an immigration checkpoint on the Northway are "ineffective" and contradictory. Republicans John McHugh and John Sweeney will question the Border Patrol about safety measures at a controversial immigration checkpoint on I-87. The victims of Sunday's crash were parked at an immigration checkpoint set up by the U.S. Border Patrol. This is the second major accident at the traffic stop in less than a year. Fiery Crash at Northway Checkpoint Leaves 4 Dead

At least four people are dead after a fiery crash Sunday afternoon at a controversial immigration checkpoint on the Northway. Officials say at least six accidents have occurred at the traffic stop this year. Brian Mann has details.

Two Canadians were also killed last week in an accident at a border checkpoint near Buffalo. Fritz Lippold, age 75, was driving toward the Peace Bridge when he struck a tractor trailer idling near an on-ramp. State police believe Lippold didn't realize traffic was stopped and never hit his brakes before slamming into the truck at high speed. Lippold, a resident of Port Colborne, Ontario, died Friday morning at a Buffalo hospital. His wife, Doreen, was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers say signs along the highway warn motorists to be alert for traffic backups near the bridge.  Go to full article

Snowstorm Hits Region: One Death In Wilton

The National weather service says yesterday's snowstorm set records across much of New York. The brunt of the storm hit in the Champlain Valley and the Albany area, triggering accidents and shutting down parts of the Thruway. Brian Mann has details.  Go to full article
