Former marketing consultant calls social media "B.S."

There's no avoiding social media these days--even if you're not on the internet, TV commercials urge you to like companies on Facebook or follow them on Twitter, newscasters read influential people's tweets on the air, and if you're not on Facebook, well, you're in for a lot of funny looks.

If you run a business or an organization, pressure to have an active social media "presence" can be intense--but the benefits you actually get from that presence may not be anywhere near as huge as what you were led to expect.  Go to full article

Search engines and social media have put a whole new spin on managing your good name. An entire industry has developed in the quest to control what people find when they punch your name into Google.

Following recent criticism, Governor Cuomo has launched a new website aimed at making his administration more transparent to the public.

Broadband internet should be something that every home and business in the town of Keene, and in general, should have.

Keene paves way for broadband

The North Country has had mixed success in winning Federal stimulus dollars to expand broadband internet service to rural towns and villages. But the Essex County town of Keene has moved forward with a grassroots effort, using a mix of grants and local fund raising, along with new, less expensive technology.

Funds scarce for broadband superhighway

Across the North Country, economic development leaders say broadband internet access is one key to building more jobs and new prosperity.

But the infrastructure for broadband is expensive, often requiring miles of expensive fiber-optic cable.

Groups across the region have been asking for help from the Federal government to help offset the cost.

Stimulus money will expand access to broadband in the North Country

Almost $50 million in federal and state stimulus money will go towards building a better broadband network across upstate New York. Wiring the North Country 2: Dialing in a new Adirondack work force?

Yesterday, we reported on the effort to bring broadband internet access to more of the North Country. Developers of those high speed data lines hope to attract more traditional bricks-and-mortar businesses. But they also hope to build a new culture of telecommuters in the region: people who work for global companies or develop new on-line businesses while living in small towns and mountain valleys.
