Potsdam, NY, Sep 02, 2009 — Next week in Potsdam, Clarkson University will host a conference called "Forever Wired." It's part of a project called the Adirondack Initiative For Wired Work. The goal is to bring more than 2,000 new corporate telecommuters to the North Country. These are people who would live here while using the internet to work for companies around the world. Tomorrow, we'll look the promise and some the challenges of telecommuting in our rural area. May 26, 2009 — Workers in the town of Keene, in Essex County, are stringing new fiber cable that will bring high-speed internet access to hundreds of homes that had relied on much slower dial-up access. The project, funded in part with a state economic development grant, is seen as a model for bringing broadband access to rural North Country towns. Feb 17, 2009 — One industry that's not suffering in the economic downturn is information technology. The demand for IT keeps growing. That's good, but the environmental consequences worry some people. Turns out the Internet is not "carbon free." Internet searches and data storage use an increasing amount of energy. Oct 09, 2008 — Another round of advertising classes for farmers, artists and small business owners begins later this month. The "Marketing for Profit" course teaches business planning, e-commerce, financing and website development. Ruby Sprowls, with the Northern Adirondack Trading Cooperative, and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County's Molly Ames stopped by to show Todd Moe some examples of local success stories. Jan 01, 2008 — The day after Christmas, President Bush signed a $555 billion spending bill. It allows the federal government to operate for another year. It also includes almost 10,000 member items, pet projects for the home districts of individual lawmakers. One of Senator Hillary Clinton's earmarks is almost $200,000 to extend broadband Internet access to rural St. Lawrence County. The money comes through the county Chamber of Commerce. Pat McKeown is the chamber's interim director. She told David Sommerstein towns like Canton, Potsdam, Massena, and Ogdensburg are covered for high-speed Internet access. Dec 07, 2007 — Governor Eliot Spitzer used his appearance yesterday at the statewide Farm Bureau meeting in Niagara Falls to unveil a new push for rural internet access.
