(03/05/10) Jefferson Community College is one step closer to becoming a residential campus.

It's a long process -- school trustees voted this week to move from studying the feasibility of building dormitories, and the impact they'd have on the Watertown college, to planning for their construction.

Betsy Penrose is Vice President of Students at JCC. She says the school is looking to bring 250 to 300 students on to campus.

(08/31/09) The massive state budget deficit is hitting SUNY campuses hard across the state. Albany has cut the SUNY budget by about 10% already and there's rumblings of additional mid-year cuts. SUNY Potsdam faces a $6 million deficit in next year's budget. The president warned to campus to expect program and faculty cuts. David Sommerstein reports. more

(03/07/08) With budget battles looming, Governor Spitzer is rallying his closest allies in the creation of a $4 billion higher education endowment fund. In a conference call yesterday, Spitzer urged SUNY presidents to advocate for his plan. David Sommerstein reports.

(02/14/08) An audience of 300 last night saw two different kinds of politician at the second debate between Republican Will Barclay and Democrat Darrel Aubertine. The two are campaigning to succeed state Senator Jim Wright. Barclay portrayed himself as the fighter who'll take on New York City Democrats. Aubertine spoke of bipartisanship and getting things done. And this time, in Watertown, the two didn't shy away from the tone set by attack ads that have been central to the race. (09/18/07) Maritime history and shipwreck have been two major themes this year in a series of lectures presented by Seway Trail in Sackets Harbor. A presentation this Thursday afternoon at Jefferson Community College in Watertown will focus on lore of the Great Lakes, particularly tales about haunted shipwrecks. Todd Moe talks with Great Lakes historian, author and teacher Frederick Stonehouse who has written more than 30 books on maritime history.

(11/07/05) Jefferson and Lewis County legislatures are up for a vote tomorrow. But the political landscape is quite different between the two. Lewis County districts have been redrawn, and 9 of 10 seats have two or more candidates. In Jefferson County, on the other hand, only 4 of 15 seats will be contested. David Sommerstein spoke with Ray Peterson, a political science professor at Jefferson Community College.

(06/23/04) Things are looking up for people in Jefferson County, thanks in large part to Fort Drum, but the economy remains the number one concern. That's according to the results of Jefferson Community College's 5th annual community survey. David Sommerstein spoke with Joel Lalone, the survey coordinator. He says residents' general satisfaction in Jefferson County dropped sharply after the 2001 terrorist attacks and during the economic recession. This year, the sense of quality of life remains lower than it was before September 11th, but it's improving. Still, Lalone says, most people cite the local economy as the number one problem.

(01/29/04) Martha Foley talks with Dr. Fred Kirschenmann, president of Kirschenmann Farms, a 3500-acre operation in North Dakota that was certified organic over 20 years ago. Kirschenmann is also director of The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Iowa. He's leading discussion today at Jefferson Community College.

Environmentalist, entrepreneur, and author Paul Hawken will help JCC examine ways to increase business and jobs in the area while conserving energy and natural resources. David Sommerstein reports.
