(05/18/04) Almost every day, we hear another report of a rocket attack on U.S. soldiers in Iraq. This morning we hear a first-hand account of a near-miss from Corporal Bill Putnam, a military journalist for the Army News Service. He's been serving in Iraq for two months. David Sommerstein met Putnam while he was in Kosovo. They've arranged for Putnam to send occasional audio diaries of his experiences.

(03/28/02) More than 3000 soldiers from Fort Drum are in the last two months of their deployment in Kosovo. Their main mission is to enforce a safe and secure environment in the war-torn region.

But the soldiers are using more than weapons to keep the peace. They're providing humantarian assistance to help rebuild a damaged land from the ground up. And they're trying to bring ethnic Albanians and ethnic Serbs together to end centuries of hatred. David Sommerstein went to Kosovo with the U.S. Army earlier this winter and has this report...

(02/28/02) More than 3000 men and women from the 10th Mountain Division--based at Fort Drum near Watertown--are deployed in the Yugoslavian province of Kosovo. They're enforcing a delicate peace between Kosovar Serbs and Kosovar Albanians. And they're helping to rebuild a region torn apart by war. But for the individual soldier, the daily grind of peacekeeping can sometimes obscure the mission. David Sommerstein recently traveled to Kosovo with the U.S. Army and has this report.

(02/14/02) Some 35,000 NATO soldiers have been stationed in the Yugoslavian province of Kosovo since 1999, when the bitter and bloody ethnic war between Serbs and Albanians ended. The peacekeepers' main mission is to provide a safe and secure environment and to help unravel centuries of ethnic strife so the two peoples can live together.

The Army's 10th Mountain Division--based at Fort Drum near Watertown--took command of the American sector of Kosovo last November. More than 3000 soldiers are now half way through their six-month deployment. David Sommerstein traveled to Kosovo recently as a guest of the Army. He takes us on a walking patrol in the town of Vitina, where Fort Drum soldiers maintain a delicate peace between Serbs and Albanians.

(02/08/02) David Sommerstein is in the Serbian province of Kosovo this week, visiting soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum. Since arriving at Camp Bondsteel, the U.S. peacekeeping base, he's been out on patrols.

(02/07/02) This week David Sommerstein is overseas with the U.S. Army. He's in the Serbian province of Kosovo, visiting with soldiers of the Tenth Mountain Division from Fort Drum near Watertown. Over 3000 Fort Drum soldiers have been there since November as a part of a multinational peacekeeping force that includes Italian, German, French, and British troops. David arrived at Camp Bondsteel, a U.S. peacekeeping base in Kosovo, Wednesday morning.

(08/24/01) This fall more than 2000 men and women will go to peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Kosovo in the Balkans. That means right now the base is at its peak of activity as troops get ready to deploy, physically, mentally and socially. David Sommerstein reports.
