(05/17/12) A State senator from Niagara county is pushing back against a plan to pipe more electricity from producers in Canada to consumers in New York City.

Senator George Maziarz says the big electricity transmission line planned to run under the water of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River would edge out power producers here in New York. Martha Foley has details. more

(05/02/12) Missisquoi Bay is in the northeast corner of Lake Champlain, along the Vermont-Quebec border. The bay has some of the highest phosphorus concentrations in the lake and is frequently plagued by blue/green algae. In 2008, the US government asked the International Joint Commission, a bi-national body that helps manage US and Canadian boundary waters, to assist in reducing phosphorus levels in the bay.

They've now completed a study that identifies where the phosphorus is coming from and how it gets to the lake. Two public hearings are underway to discuss the results. Sarah Harris was at last night's meeting in Saint Armand, Quebec and has more. more

(03/27/12) Yesterday we kicked off our pledge drive week with a look back at the North Country's Year of the Floods. Brian Mann reported on historic spring rains and snow melt that sent rivers across the North Country surging beyond their banks, ripping through mountain towns.

Much of that water flowed into Lake Champlain, triggering a secondary flood in communities in New York, Vermont and Quebec that lasted for weeks. This morning, we look back at how dozens of shore towns weathered the long crisis.

(02/29/12) The company that hopes to run a $2-billion underwater electric line from Quebec to New York City says it has reached an agreement with some of the environmental groups that had raised concerns about the project.

Donald Jessome, head of TDI, says the deal was reached after 15 months of closed-door negotiations and will shape how the underwater line is laid under Lake Champlain and the Hudson River. more

Back in 1929, the original bridge was state-of-the-art for the era.

(11/08/11) A crisis that disrupted tourism, farming and family ties along the Champlain Valley came to an end yesterday, as officials from New York and Vermont cut the ribbon for the new Crown Point bridge.

The $70 million structure re-establishes the link from Crown Point to Addison, Vermont. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, by hundreds of local residents, and by a group of "29ers."

They're the folks who were also on hand in 1929 when the first bridge was unveiled. Martha Foley has more.

(11/08/11) As we've been hearing, yesterday's ceremony is part of the long history of the Lake Champlain bridge and the deep connection between communities on both sides of the border.

(08/24/11) State transportation officials in New York say the giant steel arch needed to complete the Lake Champlain bridge will be moved into place tomorrow if weather permits. DOT commissioner Joan McDonald issued a statement saying that the event will mark a "historic day for the people of the region who heavily depend on the bridge for their livelihoods."

The bridge from Crown Point New York to Addison Vermont was closed and condemned two years ago, after engineers found that its support piers were crumbled. Brian Mann headed out on the lake this week to get a preview of the route that the new 400-foot long arch will travel from the construction yard in Port Henry to the bridge site in Crown Point. He sent this audio postcard.
