(07/09/10) We'll close out this sizzling week with the spicy sounds of the Potsdam group, "Piquant!" They joined Todd Moe in the studio for some live Latin/bistro music. The ensemble has a busy weekend performing at the Potsdam Summer Festival on Saturday and at the Norwood Village Green Concert Series on Sunday night.

(07/02/10) It still hasn't cracked the pop charts, but Latin Alternative music is getting big in the U.S. Supergroups like Ozomatli and Manu Chao are selling out huge shows. And the music has hit its creative stride, fusing traditional latin rhythms with everything from hip hop and indy rock to punk and blues. Upstate New York native Josh Norek has been at the center of it all. Norek grew up in Albany. He now runs Nacional Records, which is releasing albums from the genre's biggest names. He founded the Latin Alternative Music Conference in New York City, which draws thousands to concerts and workshops. And he now hosts a nationally syndicated radio program called the Latin Alternative. You can hear it on North Country Public Radio Friday nights at 10. David Sommerstein asked Josh Norek how he got interested in latin music as an Upstate New Yorker.

(03/24/10) The Crane Latin Ensemble mixes up a selection of classical salsa and Latin jazz tonight (7:30) in Snell Theater in Potsdam. They'll perform favorites like Tito Puente's Frenzy and Eddie Palmieri's Bilongo. Last spring, Todd Moe sat in on a rehearsal and spoke with some of the students and director Marsha Baxter who started the group when she arrived ten years ago with a passion for Latin music.

(03/27/09) The SUNY-Potsdam campus is quiet this week for Spring Break, but earlier this month a practice room at the Crane School of Music was sizzling with salsa! The 21 musicians represent nearly every aspect of music life at Crane - strings, brass, percussion, piano, woodwinds and voice. They're preparing for another trip to Mexico this summer. Todd Moe sat in on a rehearsal and spoke with some of the students and director Marsha Baxter who started the group when she arrived ten years ago with a passion for Latin music.

(04/03/06) Massive protests in California are providing a dramatic backdrop for the debate in Washington over America's immigration policy. The issue can seem distant in the North Country. But Jamaican apple pickers already use a legal guest worker program in the Champlain Valley. Illegal immigrants are becoming more common on area construction sites. And the number of Hispanic workers on dairy farms is growing fast. John Lincoln is president of the New York Farm Bureau. He employs two Guatemalan workers on his dairy farm near Canandaigua. David Sommerstein asked Lincoln what he sees in the immigration rallies in California.

(04/29/05) Ricardo Lemvo and his band Makina Loca combine Latin and African elements from salsa to soukous in their world music. Lemvo and his band perform in SUNY Potsdam's Hosmer Hall Saturday night (7:30pm). He spoke with Todd Moe.
