More than 50 people were reported to be on the bus. The number and extent of injuries is unclear, but one fatality has been confirmed.

2nd update: Fatal bus crash on Adirondack Northway

State police say a bus has rolled over on the in the northbound lane of the Northway in the Adirondacks just after 8 am Friday.

According to a statement issued a short time ago, New York State Police remain on the scene of a commercial bus rollover on I-87 in North Hudson in Essex County.

"The bus was traveling south on I-87 from Quebec City to New York City," according to police, "when it veered off the shoulder of the highway and into the median..."

Don Jaquish, emergency services director for Essex County, has confirmed to North Country Public Radio that there is one fatality, along with a "a few serious injuries."

There's no word yet on what caused the accident, though Jaquish says a "reconstruction team is on the scene."

State police say a total of 56 people were aboard the bus.

"Several others are being treated for mostly minor injuries at three area hospitals," they report.

Glens Falls Hospital, Fletcher Allen Health Care Medical Center and Elizabethtown Community Hospital have all helped care for the injured.

Motorists traveling in the area of the accident should expect long delays. The passing lanes both north and sound bound are closed.

"Traffic is slowed and heavy," he said, noting that travelers in the area should expect delays.

Several area fire departments and the Essex County Sheriff's Office are assisting at the scene, according to police.
