Alcoa to Lay Off 110

Alcoa Primary Metals will eliminate 110 jobs at its East Smelter plant in Massena. But a new $7 million dollar power contract and a joint labor-management restructuring effort will keep the plant operating, at least for another year. David Sommerstein reports.  Go to full article

Hope For Alcoa East?

State and local lawmakers are hopeful after a meeting Monday with Alcoa officials and the New York Power Authority to find ways to cut costs at Alcoa's East plant in Massena. Alcoa has told plant officials to cut $23 million from next year's budget, which could endanger the jobs of more than 125 workers. State Sues Massena Woman For Pyramid Scheme

A St. Lawrence County woman stands accused of bringing a pyramid scheme to the region and duping hundreds of women out of thousands of dollars. The State Attorney General's office filed a civil suit Thursday seeking the woman's profits. David Sommerstein reports.  Go to full article

Massena-Cornwall Mutual Aid Plan

An agreement approved by St. Lawrence County lawmakers will allow for better cooperation with Canadian officials during severe emergencies. Border Security in Akwesasne Since 9/11

The U-S has stepped up border security in the year since September 11th with more patrol officers, greater scrutiny at border crossings, and new collaboration with Canada. Washington has also been working with the 19 tribes whose lands lie along the borders. The Akwesasne Mohawk reservation actually straddles the border east of Massena, and is known as one of the most difficult areas to patrol. Preview: Civil War Weekend in Massena

One of the largest Civil War reenactments in the region takes place at Robert Moses State Park in Massena this weekend. Music, cannon fire, military drilling and campfire stories are part of the event. More than 5,000 men from St. Lawrence County enlisted in the Civil War, and New York contributed more soldiers to the war than any other state. Todd Moe caught up with John Baylis, of Cassville, NY, who will portray President Lincoln this weekend.  Go to full article

Alcoa Turns 100

The St. Lawrence County village of Massena kicked off two weeks of events this week to celebrate its 200th birthday. Tomorrow marks another Massena milestone. Alcoa--the Aluminum Company of America--commemorates 100 years since it broke ground on its aluminum smelting operation.

Alcoa made Massena a classic company town for decades. Today's residents are descendants of European immigrants who sought work at the height of the industrial age. Like most North Country history, Alcoa's story starts with water. David Sommerstein looks at the past and future of Alcoa in Massena.  Go to full article

McCall Impresses St. Lawrence County Dems

State comptroller and Democratic candidate for Governor Carl McCall made his first campaign swing through St. Lawrence County on Friday. He impressed party faithful with his fiscal experience and his stance on education. Strong winds forced McCall's airplane to abandon a planned stop in Hamilton County. He arrived early to the St. Lawrence County Democrats' annual dinner in Massena. David Sommerstein was there and has this report.  Go to full article
