First Meth Lab Found In Canton

Stiffer Penalties for Meth Labs

Methamphetamine, or crystal meth, is a powerful stimulant. It's manufactured from a number of readily available products, like over-the-counter cold medicine and common agricultural fertilizer. The state legislature has just passed new legislation that would make it illegal to possess combinations of these materials, plus the instruments used to mix the meth. It means meth makers can be prosecuted even if the finished drug is not found. Governor Pataki has said he will sign the legislation. It will put state law in line with existing federal law. State law enforcement have had to turn to federal authorities for help prosecuting meth labs. Greg Warner spoke with Sheriff John Burns of Jefferson County. Jefferson County has had one of the state's highest rates of meth lab busts in recent years.  Go to full article
