Property tax cap would reshape North Country economy
Jan 10, 2008 — One of the most anticipated parts of Governor Spitzer's State of the State address was his proposal to confront spiraling property taxes. Spitzer established a new bi-partisan commission that will search for answers to the problem, possibly including a cap on property tax hikes. But here in the North Country, property taxes fuel everything from local highway departments to senior health care and after-school sports. They also fund a huge percentage of high-paying jobs. Exploring the "Color Bind" in North Country Schools
Dec 12, 2005 — Like many rural regions across the U.S., the north country has far fewer African Americans and Hispanics than the national average. This week the Plattsburgh Press Republican is examining the issue of race as it affects our schools. The paper's reporters found that many of the region's kids have little opportunity to interact with racial minorities.
