NY-20: Final Murphy-Gibson debate brings substance

With just over a week to go before the November election, Congressman Scott Murphy and challenger Chris Gibson met last night for the final debate in the 20th House district race.

That district stretches from Poughkeepsie in the south all the way to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid in the North.

The face-off in Troy was civil and issue-driven, despite an often bitter and negative ad campaign that has included millions of dollars in spending by outside groups.

Brian Mann was one of the panelists for last night's debate and has our story.  Go to full article

Siena: Gibson, Hanna struggling in House races

Exactly six weeks remain until election day. Here in northern New York, Republicans are pushing hard to unseat three sitting Democrats, congressmen Mike Arcuri, Scott Murphy, and Bill Owens. These races could help decide which party holds a majority in the House of Representatives.

But new polls published over the last few days by the Siena Research Institute show that in two of these races the Republican candidates are struggling to catch up.

Brian Mann spoke in-depth with Siena pollster Steven Greenberg, who says Republicans Chris Gibson and Richard Hanna need to lock down the loyalty of GOP voters. "It is key for both of the Republican candidates...to bring the base back home," Greenberg says.

He calls the 24th district House race "incredibly competitive," but says the 20th district race will be more of a struggle for Gibson. "I think the 20th definitely has the potential to be a competitive race," he adds.  Go to full article

Web extra: Brian Mann talks in-depth with Rep. Scott Murphy

In a sit-down interview this week with North Country Public Radio, Rep. Scott Murphy said that his political identity is distinct from that of his national party going into this fall's midterm election.

Will voters buy that argument, despite Murphy's support for key elements of the Democratic agenda?

In a district where registered Republicans outnumber registered Democrats, that question may define whether or not Murphy wins a full first term in his race with Republican challenger Chris Gibson.

Here is Rep. Murphy's unedited conversation with Brian Mann.  Go to full article

Rep. Murphy: Without loan from state, Saratoga horse racing season won't happen

Congressman Scott Murphy says there is a growing risk that this summer's thoroughbred racing season in Saratoga Springs could be canceled. The move would devastate the region's tourism economy.

Yesterday, the New York Racing Authority sent letters to its employees warning of possible lay-offs. State officials have failed to provide revenue to the thoroughbred industry from a proposed video-lottery terminal casino. The project has been stalled for nearly a decade.

The New York Racing Authority now says this summer's thoroughbred season, scheduled to begin in July, could be canceled if the legislature doesn't provide a bridge loan. Congressman Murphy from Glens Falls has been working to try to broker a settlement. He spoke yesterday with Brian Mann.  Go to full article

Retired Iraq war vet seeks to unseat Murphy

Democrat Scott Murphy is stockpiling funds to defend his 20th district seat this November. According to the Daily Politics news blog, the freshman Congressman had his best-ever fundraising quarter to start this year, raising $475,000. The blog quotes chief of staff Todd Schulte as saying Murphy has more than a million dollars on hand now.

Murphy's challenge will come from retired Army Colonel Chris Gibson. Gibson is a Republican from Kinderhook in Columbia County. He left the Army in February after doing Haiti earthquake relief with the 82nd Airbourne Division. Over his 24-year military career, Gibson fought in the first Gulf War. He also did three tours of duty in Iraq since 2003. And he participated in the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. Gibson told David Sommerstein he believes the country needs new leadership, something his military background provides. He says the country is going in the wrong direction.  Go to full article
