School leaders seek answers on bomb hoaxes

The Newtown shootings and the Boston Marathon bombings have left all of America asking questions about security. But schools have been particularly on edge.

Another bomb hoax caused an early dismissal at Norwood-Norfolk central schools on Tuesday, according to NorthCountryNow.com. It's the third in recent weeks at the school. A fake bomb threat forced the evacuation of Madrid-Waddington schools last week.

In St. Lawrence County, there have been at least half a dozen bomb hoaxes at schools in the last month. They've forced school leaders to walk a tightrope between safety and maintaining a normal school day.  Go to full article

Lake and rivers recede, but flooding still problem

A mostly rain-free weekend has brought much needed relief to the flood-stricken North Country. But for people whose basements are inundated or whose houses are surrounded by water, the danger isn't over. And the recovery is just beginning.

Lake Champlain has receded slightly to 102.9 feet at Rouses Point. Flood stage is 100 feet. In the town of Champlain, crews were bringing sandbags and supplies over the weekend to families isolated by flooding. Highway superintendent Allen Racine told the Plattsburgh Press-Republican "it's like a war zone."

The Raquette River drew down below 10 feet over the weekend. But some homes in Colton, Potsdam, and Norwood are still under water. David Sommerstein spoke with St. Lawrence County Emergency Services director Marty Hassett this morning.  Go to full article

Water levels uncertain down the Raquette

The company that manages the hydroelectric dams downstream from Tupper Lake along the Raquette River says it's starting to see water levels go down. But with more rain in the forecast, it's not clear if that trend will hold. David Sommerstein reports.  Go to full article

Bracing for more water on the Raquette

Stalking the elusive morel

This is the season when morels are hunted by thousands of people simply for their taste and the joy of the hunt. They're another sign of spring in the North Country. Mushroom hunters say their favorite fungi are popping up earlier than usual this year. Todd Moe has caught morel fever every spring since he was a child, and heads into his own back woods to look for these "aristocrats" of the forest.  Go to full article

UpNorth Music: Gwen and Jim Tracy

Always interested in being a musician, Jim Tracy has been a member of several bands in and around his hometown of Big Moose. His daughter, Gwen, remembers waking up Saturday mornings to the sound of her father playing guitar, and her mother singing in the house. Gwen is the lead vocalist in Delia, a band that allows her strong blues voice to shine. Gwen and Jim will perform this Sunday evening (5 pm) as part of the Norwood Village Green Concert Series "In the Neighborhood Singer/Songwriter Festival." They spoke with Jill Breit after their UpNorth Music session in Old Forge last June.  Go to full article
