The Affordable Healthcare Act is expected to be front and center in next year's congressional campaign. Republicans are hoping to turn dissatisfaction with the law into a wave of victories in 2014.

Democrats, meanwhile, have been pressuring President Barack Obama to improve the program sometimes known as "Obamacare," which was designed to make insurance more affordable to millions more Americans.

Some Democratic lawmakers have even been distancing themselves from the policy.

But North Country's congressman Bill Owens, a Democrat from Plattsburgh, appears comfortable campaigning on his support for the Healthcare Act and says the program is working for people in his district.  Go to full article

The House Ethics Committee announced yesterday that it is extending its review of Congressman Bill Owens' controversial trip to Taiwan in 2011. The panel also released a preliminary report from investigators.

That probe found that the Democrat from Plattsburgh may have violated congressional guidelines by making a trip paid for by a foreign government.

Investigators are also calling for subpoenas to be issued in the next phase of the probe.  Go to full article

North Country House delegation votes yes on"fiscal cliff" deal

North Country congressman Bill Owens, a Democrat from Plattsburgh, voted in favor of a zero-hour spending bill late last night that averted the so-called "fiscal cliff".

Owens was joined by Republicans Chris Gibson and Richard Hanna, who also currently represent parts of the North Country.

They helped lift the measure past opposition from conservative Republicans. The bill passed on a vote of 257 to 167.

The controversial bipartisan deal came just in time to spare the country broad tax hikes and deep cuts to Federal spending, which Owens called "dangerous."  Go to full article

Owens wins NY21 after tough race

Democrat Bill Owens survived one of the most costly and bitter political campaigns in North Country history Tuesday night.

The Plattsburgh congressman traded blows through the summer with Matt Doheny, a Watertown investment banker.

Doheny promised to return the region's House district to Republican hands in 2010 and again in 2012.

But once again Tuesday night, Owens prevailed -- this time holding the seat by at least 4,000 votes.  Go to full article
