It's shaping up to be a tough year for Republicans. Even in once-safe congressional districts, many GOP candidates face stiff competition. Democrats are making their biggest push in the Northeast. New York Republicans face hard times

Republicans in New York state face a difficult election year and an uncertain future. Governor George Pataki is leaving office and is likely to be replaced by the state's Democratic Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer. Republican candidates are lagging in every major statewide election. Spitzer makes North Country connections

Attorney General Eliot Spitzer spent the day campaigning in the North Country yesterday. The frontrunner in the Governor's race met with law enforcement officials, toured economic development projects, and rallied local Democrats. Spitzer and running mate David Patterson are both from New York City. Energy industry supports top NY politicians
