Guns Across the River: The Story of the Forgotten "Alamo of the North"

In November of 1838, there was a little known attack on Prescott, Ontario. A group of mostly New Yorkers, known as the Hunter Patriots, landed at Windmill Point, across from Ogdensburg, convinced thousands of Canadians would join them to oust the British from North America. State Grants for St. Lawrence River Tourism

Special Report: Roman Catholic Priest Shortage Reshapes North Country Life

The Roman Catholic Church has been a powerful force in the North Country since the region was settled by whites hundreds of years ago. But the once-firm fabric of community parishes is under increasing strain. A shortage of priests has forced the Diocese of Ogdensburg to close churches, and move priests to serve more congregations. The process has continued through the summer and fall. Currently, one in four parishes in the North Country lacks a resident pastor. As Brian Mann reports, the crisis began long before the current sex-abuse scandals, and it's changing the work of the local churches.  Go to full article

State of Mental Health Care in the Prisons

A new report issued today argues that the 67,000 inmates in New York's prison system need better health care - and mental health counseling. Eleven percent of the state's prisoners are diagnosed with mental illness. Brian Mann talks with Jennifer Wynn, with the Correctional Association of New York, which issued the study.

The Department of Correctional Services declined to be interviewed to respond to the report, instead issuing a press release.  Go to full article
