(02/03/12) Winter carnivals fill the February calendar in the North Country. This year, continuing mild weather is proving a real challenge for towns whose annual winter festivals normally punctuate a cold, snowy season.

The WinterXcape Winterfest in Lowville was cancelled when heavy rains washed away most of their snow this week. But despite widespread rain and warm temperatures most festivals are still ago. Trevor Alford reports. more

(01/04/12) Todd Moe talks with Linda Weal, curator of the newest exhibit at View in Old Forge. The show, Adirondack View Finders, is on display through early March and includes dozens of photographs from four of the most celebrated photographers in the Adirondacks.

Linda Cohen and Peg Masters, both descendants of pioneers of the Old Forge region, are co-authors of, "Old Forge and the Fulton Chain of Lakes", the latest book in the Arcadia series of local history picture books.

(12/29/10) It's just across the road, but the leading arts organization in Old Forge moves to a new home in the coming new year. The staff and a crew of volunteers at the Arts Center/Old Forge are busy packing and moving this week while finishing touches and fine tuning of the new building wrap up, as well. The new arts center, with more than three times the space of the old facility, will open to the public the week of January 10. A formal grand opening celebration is planned for next summer. Todd Moe spoke with Arts Center/Old Forge Executive Director Jennifer Potter Hayes about the new space and a new chapter in the Old Forge arts community.

(10/20/10) A new poll released this morning shows Democrat Mike Arcuri pulling ahead of his Republican challenger. Arcuri faces businessman Richard Hanna in the 24th district House race that includes the area around Old Forge. According to a poll commissioned by the non-partisan newspaper The Hill, Arcuri is leading the race among likely voters by a margin of 47 to 37 percent.

Arcuri and Hanna met last night in a debate the Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica. Brian Mann has our story.

(10/06/10) A New Jersey woman spent most of this summer paddling from the Adirondacks to Maine. Cathy Mumford is the first woman to solo through-paddle the entire 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail. During her 62-day kayak odyssey she passed through 22 rivers and streams, 56 miles of lakes, 55 miles of portages in 62 carries and three national wildlife refuges. The trail crosses northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Quebec. NFCT officials say fewer than 30 paddlers have completed the full length of water trail in a single trip, since it was completed in 2006. Mumford grew up along the shores of a reservoir in Colts Neck, New Jersey. With her children grown, and after being laid off from her job, Mumford wanted to take a long-distance kayak trip that would allow for some soul-searching. Now, she plans to share the challenge of wilderness tripping with young women, and write about her experiences. Todd Moe spoke with Mumford about the summer trek, celebrating her 50th birthday on the water and relying on her 9-foot plastic kayak, nicknamed "Sparky".

(09/28/10) An Old Forge couple spent most of this spring and summer outdoors. Catherine and Ryan Thompson paddled the Northern Forest Canoe Trail from Old Forge to Maine, and then hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. They began the nearly 3,000 mile journey from the Adirondacks to Georgia, by canoe and foot, in April. They finished their trek last Thursday. This was their fourth backpacking adventure together. Todd Moe talks with them about life on the water and trail.

(05/21/10) Thousands of paddlers are gathering in Old Forge for Adirondack Paddlefest 2010 this weekend. Its biggest draw is an opportunity to test paddle hundreds of different canoes and kayaks. Manufacturers use the weekend to unveil some of the latest designs and materials. Todd Moe talks with John Nemjo, owner of Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company. He's the organizer of the annual event that draws outdoors enthusiasts from around the country.

(03/30/10) The Arts Center of Old Forge got some good news this month. A new building project, just across the road, had been on hold due to a lack of funds. But with a new USDA loan and grant that total $3-million, construction is expected to resume next month. Todd Moe spoke with Arts Center director Jennifer Potter Hayes. She's been on the job for about six weeks and says she hopes the new building will open this fall.
