Mar 20, 2013 — Today is the first day of spring. It's also World Storytelling Day -- a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling, celebrated every year on the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere, the first day of autumn in the southern. Everyone has a story to tell, and there are lots of storytellers in our region.

For over 25 years, Mitch Lee has been telling tales about life in the mountains and the big woods. He was born and raised in the west-central Adirondacks. When he isn't busy spinning tales at schools, libraries and community groups, Lee runs the Parks Department in Inlet, NY where he helps promote local tourism. He also writes the weekly column, Growing up Adirondack, for The Weekly Adirondack newspaper. Dec 17, 2012 — The Adirondacks' beloved icon, the Common Loon, has left for its winter home on the Atlantic coast.

Loons have enjoyed unprecedented population growth over the last 30 years. They outlived DDT and a time when people used to shoot loons for sport. But a recent study says things could have been even better. This time the culprit is mercury pollution.  Go to full article

Old Forge, NY, Nov 07, 2012 — Quilts of all sizes and designs are on display at View in Old Forge this month. The 26th annual Quilts Unlimited show includes more than 120 quilts in a great array of styles from traditional to contemporary from across the country. Todd Moe spoke with View Education and Artistic Programs Director Barbara Getty, who says View is also displaying quilts from Watertown award-winning quilter and designer Mary Knapp. Getty says the annual exhibit gives the building a "comfortable" feeling.  Go to full article

Old Forge, NY, Aug 22, 2012 — Authorities say a small plane that was forced to land on an Adirondack lake last week had lost its propeller in midair. The plane was contracted by the U.S. Defense Department to support an ongoing Vermont Air National Guard training exercise. It was recovered from Gull Lake in northern Herkimer County over the weekend by a private salvage company.  Go to full article

Saranac Lake, NY, Feb 03, 2012 — Winter carnivals fill the February calendar in the North Country. This year, continuing mild weather is proving a real challenge for towns whose annual winter festivals normally punctuate a cold, snowy season.

Old Forge, NY, Dec 29, 2010 — It's just across the road, but the leading arts organization in Old Forge moves to a new home in the coming new year. The staff and a crew of volunteers at the Arts Center/Old Forge are busy packing and moving this week while finishing touches and fine tuning of the new building wrap up, as well. The new arts center, with more than three times the space of the old facility, will open to the public the week of January 10. A formal grand opening celebration is planned for next summer. Old Forge, NY, Oct 20, 2010 — A new poll released this morning shows Democrat Mike Arcuri pulling ahead of his Republican challenger. Arcuri faces businessman Richard Hanna in the 24th district House race that includes the area around Old Forge. According to a poll commissioned by the non-partisan newspaper The Hill, Arcuri is leading the race among likely voters by a margin of 47 to 37 percent.
