Ortloff Plan To Limit Property Tax Growth

Assemblyman Chris Ortloff, a Republican from Plattsburgh, is building support for a major property tax reform package. The bill fell short in a test vote earlier this week, but won support from 14 Democratic lawmakers. Ortloff's $5 billion plan is designed to slow increases in property taxes. It would also shift more public school and Medicaid costs onto the state b udget. That means taxpayers downstate would pick up more of the bill for education and social programs here in the North Country. Duprey Begins Campaign to Unseat Ortloff

Clinton County Treasuer Janet Duprey kicked off her campaign to try and unseat incumbent state Assemblyman Chris Ortloff on Tuesday. The official announcement, made at stops in Plattsburgh, Malone and Saranac Lake, sets the stage for what's expected to be a hard-fought Republican primary in the 114th Assembly District, which includes Clinton and Franklin Counties and the Town of St. Armand in Essex County. GOP's North Country Stronghold Now In Play

The North Country has long been seen a stronghold for New York's Republican Party. Deep support in this region helped elect Governor George Pataki. In some towns, voter registration still runs 3-to-1 in favor of the GOP. But for the first time in decades, the North Country has a Democratic assemblyman, Darryl Aubertine, who won re-election in 2004 by a 2-to-1 margin. In last week's election, Democrat LeRoy Akins edged incumbent Republican Harold Taylor and will take over as mayor of Glens Falls. Plattsburgh assemblyman Chris Ortloff, a Republican, represents the 114th District. Ortloff says his party can't take this region's support for granted, especially in 2006.  Go to full article

Lawmakers Debate Gas Price Relief

Ortloff: Disease May Mean Permanent Ban On Deer Feeding

Assemblyman Chris Ortloff, from Plattsburgh, will take part in a new Republican task force designed to promote hunting and fishing. The move comes as the number of hunters in New York state continues to dwindle. Speaking this week with Brian Mann, Ortloff says the discovery of Chronic Wasting Disease in deer herds in Oneida County poses a major new threat to sportsmen and to groups that feed white tail deer.  Go to full article

114th Assembly Race Undecided, Democrats Flex Muscles

Election officials in Clinton and Franklin counties are still counting absentee ballots in the 114th district Assembly race. The margin between incumbent Republican Chris Ortloff and Democratic challenger Bernie Bassett has tightened to fewer than 1700 votes. Roughly roughly four thousand ballots remain to be counted. Bassett says he hopes he'll pull ahead and will wait until the vote is certified next week. Ortloff is already back in Albany and says he's confident that he'll be re-elected. This race is tighter than most observers expected. Democrats also held the River District in St. Lawrence County and taking control of the Franklin County legislature. Speaking yesterday with Brian Mann, Ortloff said this election was a wake-up call for North Country for Republicans.  Go to full article

Ortloff Leads In 114th, Sayward Dominates in 113th

A bitter race for the 114th assembly district ended with harsh words last night from both candidates. Incumbent Republican Chris Ortloff declared victory and slammed the state Democratic Party for working to unseat him. But Challenger Bernie Bassett refused to concede defeat until absentee ballots are tallied. Brian Mann reports.

113th District Update: As expected the assembly race in the 113th assembly district was a blow-out. Incumbent Republican Teresa Sayward defeated Democrat Dennis Tarantino by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.  Go to full article
