Plattsburgh: Pakistani Border Crisis Simmers As Deadline Passes

Today is the deadline for thousands of Pakistanis and Saudis living in the U-S, who are required to register with the Federal government. Officials with the Department of Homeland Security say the program has been a success. But special registration sent shockwaves through New York's Muslim immigrant community. The law triggered a refugee crisis on the border north of Plattsburgh, as hundreds of families fled to Canada. Plattsburgh: Flow of Pakistanis Slows, Detainments Continue

The flow of Pakistani refugees reaching the Canadian border north of Plattsburgh slowed over the weekend. Roughly fifty asylum seekers remain in shelters in Burlington and Plattsburgh. More and more Pakistanis are trying to find refuge from new U.S. immigrant registration rules in Canada. A bottleneck at the border north of Plattsburgh is splitting families and sending people to shelters in northern New York and beyond.
