Jul 01, 2002 — Changes in Canadian immigration laws are causing nearly 100 refugees to take up temporary housing at the Plattsburgh Salvation Army. Immigrants from across the world are being turned away at the border and give appointments to come back to apply for entry at a later date. For some, that could mean a couple of weeks in the shelter. Jun 24, 2002 — A decade ago, a base-closing sweep cost New York ten-thousand jobs at bases in Plattsburgh, Rome and Staten Island. In the last round of base closures, in 1995, Governor Pataki says lobbying efforts allowed the state to avoid cuts of some four-thousand jobs in Rome and Niagara Falls. Queensbury supervisor Nicholas Caimano, a Republican, has already announced that he'll run to replace Betty Little. With incumbents out of the way, the shifting political scene represents a rare opening for the Democratic party. Apr 22, 2002 — A moderate earthquake hit the north country on Saturday, damaging churches, cracking foundations, and shattering storefront windows.
