Grand jury rules on Saranac Lake police

A grand jury is recommending disciplinary action against an unnamed "public servant" in Saranac Lake following a car crash last year that involved two village police officers. The grand jury in Franklin County is not recommending criminal charges be filed against police chief Donald Perryman, Jr., or the two policemen involved. Domestic violence charge rocks Sweeney race

The 20th congressional district race was rocked yesterday when two newspapers published reports of a domestic incident in December involving Republican incumbent John Sweeney and his wife Gaia, who goes by the name Gayle. The Albany Times-Union and the New York Daily News reported that Sweeney allegedly grabbed his wife by the neck. The development comes with just a week left in the campaign, as Sweeney faces the toughest re-election fight of his career against Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand. Saranac Lake suspends police chief and two officers

The Village of Saranac Lake has suspended Police Chief Donald Perryman Jr. and two members of the village police department for incidents surrounding a car crash that occurred last fall. Perryman, Sergeant Bruce Nason and Officer Casey Reardon were notified yesterday that they've been suspended without pay. Heard up North: Landlady Caught in Crossfire

Ed Remington's case in St. Lawrence County highlights a gray area of the consequences of New York's Megan's Law. Gregory Warner went to Chestnut Street. He found two houses with posters on them. Posters had also been hung on 10 Chestnut St. in Potsdam, where Remington is now living. His landlady, Eileen Sellers, says she's felt like an innocent bystander, caught in the crossfire. Questions Over Border Stops Inside the Border

The U.S. Border Patrol has dramatically increased the use of road checkpoints inside the U.S.- Canada border. One on the Adirondack Northway grabbed headlines last year after 4 people died and more than 50 were seriously injured in accidents there. But there are also dozens of border patrol checkpoints on smaller roads across the North Country. The Border Patrol says they're a critical second line of defense for stopping terrorism. But some citizens and civil liberties groups say they're an invasion of privacy and may not be very effective. David Sommerstein reports.  Go to full article

Police Seek Stolen Morphine Patches

St. Lawrence County police are looking for up to 50 morphine patches and painkillers. Several teens stole the drugs from a house Friday night. As David Sommerstein reports, three teens overdosed on the drugs at a party. One remains in the hospital.  Go to full article
