Broken Bus Strands Inmate Visitors

Dozens of women and children were stranded Sunday night at a rest stop on the Northway. They were visiting inmates at north country prisons. The chartered bus broke down Sunday evening and the family-members were left stranded until mid-day on Monday, when a replacemente bus picked them up. State police fed and cared for at least thirty-five people, most from New York City. The owners of the bus company couldn't be reached for comment. Saratoga County Jail Doc Blamed For Inmate Death

Survivors of Attica Uprising Happy with Settlement

Survivors of the Attica Prison uprising and the families of Attica victims say they've gotten nearly everything they wanted in a settlement offered by Governor George Pataki. Members of the group "Forgotten Victims of Attica" spoke at a meeting in Batavia yesterday, saying the agreement largely brings to a close what they call "one of the most disgraceful chapters in American prison history." North Country Prisons to Lose 148 Jobs

Mandatory Sex Offender Therapy Ends in NY Prisons

On Thursday, New York's state prisons shut down a major counseling program for sex offenders. The move follows a court ruling that the program violated prisoner's constitutional rights by forcing them to disclose all past sexual offenses. North Country Prison Guards Face Tough Choices

Communities in the North Country are bracing for a round of job cuts that could force more than 160 corrections officers to transfer out of the region. State prisons in Cape Vincent, Watertown, and Ogdensburg are expected to lose jobs. A minimum security facility in Saratoga County is expected to close altogether after the state budget is approved this spring. Brian Mann spoke with Richard Harcrow, head of NYSCOPBA, the prison guards' union. Harcrow is on the road, talking with officers who may have to leave home to find work.  Go to full article
