Schenectady, NY, Jul 27, 2009 — Twenty-five years ago this summer, Jeff Blatnick won a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. The Schenectady native's upset victory in Graeco-Roman wrestling was one of the big stories of the 1984 summer games. It also marked one of the most dramatic comebacks in sports history. Blatnick lives now and coaches in Saratoga County. But his sports career was nearly cut short, first by cold war politics and then by a brutal fight with cancer. Brian Mann has our profile. Dec 26, 2002 — It's been a tough year for many non-profits in the North Country. Charities have seen their investments dwindle, as the stock market spiraled downward. Donors are writing fewer checks - and the checks they are writing often promise fewer dollars. Brian Mann sat down this week with Cali Brooks, head of the Adirondack Community Trust. Dec 20, 2002 — Walt Disney opened his first theme park in the summer of 1955. But half a decade before Disneyland, there was Santa's Workshop in Wilmington ? the creation of north country native Arto Monaco. Monaco built a half-dozen theme parks. Sep 24, 2002 — It's possible to grow up--and grow old--in a North Country town, never quite noticing its treasures. Paul Wilbur was raised in Speculator, in the woods and bogs along the Sacandaga River. At the age of seventy, he volunteered to lead construction of a community park and a nature trail. The project reconnected him with his community and with his own history. Brian Mann spent a morning with Paul Wilbur and sends this audio postcard.
Directions to the Sacandaga River Community Park: Take Rt. 30 to the four corners in Speculator. South of the intersection, look for the Lemon Tree restaraunt. Across the road, you'll see the community recreation area and the park entrance. Go to full article
