New York invests big in Fort Drum housing

Thursday we reported that the North Country was one of the top winners of grant money and economic development funding in Governor Cuomo's statewide competition.

The region won $90.2 million for everything from waterfront development in the Thousand Islands to tourism marketing in the Adirondacks. But one of the biggest single investments that New York will make is in new housing, including apartments and multi-family homes, for the area around Fort Drum.

North Country captures $90.2 million development prize

For the second year in a row, the North Country won top honors in the statewide economic development competition organized by Governor Cuomo.

The award was announced Wednesday at a ceremony in Albany. It will mean more than $90 million in additional funding and tax breaks for new initiatives. That compares with just $50 million dollars that will go to projects in New York City.

Economic developers in the North Country say winning top honors two years in a row is a major vote of confidence for the region. They also say the dollars will boost key initiatives, from new housing development around Fort Drum to tourism infrastructure in the Adirondacks.  Go to full article

Cuomo divvies up regional economic aid

Governor Cuomo awarded over three quarters of a billion dollars for economic development projects at a ceremony Wednesday at the State Capitol. While every region in the state got something to go towards key projects, some regions got more than others.  Go to full article

In Plattsburgh, Cuomo touts economic revitalization

Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Plattsburgh Wednesday, where he toured the Strand Theater and the Bombardier plant. Advocates want Douglas removed from North Country Regional Economic Development Council

Multi-use trail advocates want Garry Douglas removed as co-chairman of the North Country Regional Economic Development Council for allegedly showing bias toward railroad operations.

In a press release issued last week, the Adirondack Recreational Trail Advocates said Douglas has shown an "overt and egregious bias in favor of rail restoration on the corridor between Utica and Lake Placid." The group says studies have proven that a recreational trail would reap greater economic benefits.  Go to full article

Canadian company's move to Ogdensburg could bring 220 jobs

It looks like the Canadian contractor General Propulsion will likely be moving its corporate headquarters to Ogdensburg.

The Ottawa-based company has manufactured products for military and civilian uses. But it's looking to work with the US Military, which places restrictions on foreign contractors.  Go to full article
