A brotherhood of voice and song
(03/12/10) It's Spring Break at SUNY-Potsdam, but also a busy week for a group of guys at the school who love to sing. The Potsdam Pointercounts are wrapping up their "In the Heat" tour in Florida, and when they return to the North Country they'll gear up for the 17th annual A Cappella Jam on March 28th (3 pm) in Hosmer Hall. Traveling and singing during school breaks is part of the tradition for the all-male group. Todd Moe stopped by a recent rehearsal and spoke with the ensemble's president, Robbie Valentine and music director Justin Moniz. They promote the group as "singing ambassadors" for the university.

(10/04/07) Ska, a rhythmically up-tempo precursor to reggae, is a strong musical influence on this band's sound. Like most of the bands we've recorded, though, their songs reflect other musical interests. Shu toured the Northeast extensively in the 1990s, mostly performing for university crowds.

(10/04/07) Don't be mislead by the name: this is NOT a heavy metal band. Friends Alex Hyatt and Liam Irwin are the songwriting heart of this band that describes its sound as alternative acoustic pop/rock. Sound engineer Joel Hurd was pretty interested in the classic Fender Rhodes keyboard they brought to their session.

(10/02/07) Ben discovered he was a natural ham when he performed in an opera at age 5. He's been in bands with his brother most of his life. Ben's solo act, often accompanied by piano, is mellower and more melodic than the music he plays in the Boston-based band The Daily Pravda.

(09/11/07) "All Northern Soul" is the way this group describes its sound. They like to write funky songs about local life, such as standing on line at Stewart's waiting to buy coffee. The band is, indeed, named after the local species of tree. Listen to the interview to learn more about this.
