Former North Country priest sentenced to 20-25 years for child rape

A former priest convicted of raping two altar boys from the Glens Falls area has been sentenced to 20 to 25 years in state prison in Massachusetts.

Gary Mercure was traveling in that state with two boys from his North Country parish when he raped and assaulted them.

The attacks happened in the 1980s. Other children who were once under Mercure's care have since come forward to say that they were also molested.  Go to full article

Reporter's Notebook: In Plattsburgh, wrestling with the moralities of abortion and choice

On Friday, roughly 200 Roman Catholic protestors held a vigil outside the Planned Parenthood clinic in Plattsburgh. They prayed for an end to legal abortion in America. They were met by some 60 pro-choice demonstrators. The supporters of Planned Parenthood called for the protection of full reproductive rights for women. The confrontation was peaceful, even dignified. The Good Friday vigil has been a tradition for 14 years. But abortion represents one of the deepest fault-lines in American society, with the two sides embracing starkly different moral visions.
