OSHA Fines GM for Workplace Violations

Trucker Charged in Fatal Crash, Victims Identified

A truck driver from Quebec City is being held without bail this morning at the Essex County jail in Elizabethtown, following Sunday's fatal crash at an immigration checkpoint on the Northway. Border Patrol Faces I-87 Checkpoint Safety Questions

The victims of Sunday's crash were parked at an immigration checkpoint set up by the U.S. Border Patrol. This is the second major accident at the traffic stop in less than a year. Speed & Noise in the American Narrows

The waters, mountains, and forests of the North Country are where people go to relax and take in nature. They're also venues for occasional conflict. Snowmobiles and ATVs compete with skiers and hikers for trails and access in the Adirondacks. On the St. Lawrence River, boats cause the controversy - the faster and the louder they are, the more they draw criticism. A new generation of high-performance power boats are becoming increasingly popular. And for some, they've become a symbol of recklessness and noise in an area that makes placid waters big business. Snowmobiles are a growing part of the north country's culture--a source of winter fun for locals and a powerful draw for tourists. But this season has seen a painful number of serious accidents and deaths. More than 20 snowmobilers have died in New York--another 26 in Ottawa and Quebec. And four more in Vermont. Canadian Study: Snowmobiles Cause High Number of Severe Injuries

A major new study released yesterday in Canada has found that snowmobile riding is top cause of severe winter sport injuries. The report - published by a non-profit group based in Ottawa - surveyed trauma cases in emergency rooms across Canada. Snowmobile Accident Kills Cadyville Woman

This weekend brought another snowmobile death in the north country. A 28-year-old woman from Cadyville died Saturday night after being thrown from a sled. As Brian Mann reports, one of the drivers involved in the accident has been charged with driving while intoxicated.  Go to full article

Thousands of North Country Families Could Lose Home Energy Help

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton says more than eighty thousand families in New York could lose home heating assistance this winter. The Bush Administration wants to cut subsidies that help low-income families pay their energy bills. With New York recovering from its second big winter storm of the season and home heating prices on the rise, critics say thousands of poor people in the north country could be hurt. December Snowmobile Deaths Mount

Authorities say one young person died and a second was injured in a snowmobile accident over the holiday weekend. Seventeen-year-old Christopher Ernest died in a crash near Albany. As Brian Mann reports, the latest fatality follows a rash of early-season snowmobile deaths.  Go to full article
