(03/22/12) You'll have a chance to show off that favorite, wild hat at Bluseed Studios in Saranac Lake on Friday night (5:30 pm). Judges will pick the craziest, most entertaining hats and the Mad Hatter's Party will also support programs for women living with cancer, chronic diseases and whose spouses are serving in the military.

Creative Healing Connections has provided retreats in the Adirondacks for women for the past 14 years and proceeds from Friday's event will fund scholarships.

Todd Moe spoke with Naj Wikoff, president of Creative Healing Connections, about Friday's Mad Hatter's Party and how the arts can be used as a tool for healing.

(03/19/12) Tomorrow (Tuesday) is village election day across the North Country. One of the races to watch is in Saranac Lake where four people are vying for two seats on the village's board of trustees.

(03/16/12) Scientists at Saranac Lake's Trudeau Institute will be putting their expertise to work for the drug development and biotech industries.

Trudeau officials announced this week that the nonprofit biomedical research center has created a contract research organization that will make Trudeau's scientific resources available to biotechnology firms, pharmaceutical companies and academic researchers on a contractual basis.

(03/13/12) A new, ecumenical church community has been formed in Saranac Lake that's trying to appeal to those who feel marginalized by the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The Crossroads Catholic Community, founded by the Rev. Christopher Courtwright-Cox, bills itself as a non-judgemental, independent religious community that welcomes gays and lesbians, and women as priests, yet still retains most Catholic traditions and practices. Chris Knight attended a Crossroads service on Saturday and filed this report.

(03/07/12) Folk singer Lee Knight has spent much of his life collecting and recording traditional songs of the Adirondacks and the Appalachians. He grew up in Saranac Lake and now lives in North Carolina.

Knight returns to the North Country every now and then to continue his research. He'll be at BluSeed Studios in Saranac Lake Thursday night (7 pm) as part of TAUNY's Song and Story Swaps series. Lee joined Todd Moe in the NCPR studios this morning to share some Native American music.

(02/07/12) We continue our series, the Adirondack Attic, with Andy Flynn. You may know Andy from his series of Adirondack Attic books on local history. He uses the objects people make, use and leave behind to tell stories about the life and times of the region.

NCPR is collaborating with Andy and his sources at the Adirondack Museum and other historical associations and museums in the region to bring these stories to air. Today, we'll get the history and the back-story of Saranac Lake's Winter Carnival, and its famous Ice Palace.

(01/26/12) Earlier this week, Tom Curley announced his retirement after nine years as president and CEO of the Associated Press. The 63 year-old Curley spent his tenure working to transform the news cooperative for the digital era. Now that he's retiring, Curley said he plans to spend more time in the Adirondacks, where he owns a home on Upper Saranac Lake with his wife, Marsha Stanley. Chris Knight intereviewed Curley this week about the changing times faced by newspapers and what he sees as the biggest issues facing the Adirondacks. more

(01/10/12) The lack of snow has been a big story for snow sports so far this winter, but there was some good news for skiers and snowboarders this past weekend in Saranac Lake.

A new ski lift at Mount Pisgah Ski Center took its first riders up the slopes on Saturday morning. The new T-bar was two and a half years in the making and was funded by a combination of state grant funding and community donations.

As Chris Knight reports, supporters say the project will help breathe new life into this small, family- and kid-friendly ski hill. more

(12/09/11) William Luce's one-woman play celebrating the life and poetry of Emily Dickinson, The Belle of Amherst, will be presented in a special performance benefiting residents of the Town of Jay who experienced the devastating effects of Tropical Storm Irene this summer. The one-woman show will be performed Saturday night (7 pm) at BluSeed Studios in Saranac Lake. Todd Moe talks with Jay actress Kathleen Recchia, who reprises her role as Dickinson for this special performance, about the show and clean-up efforts that still continue this month.
