Lysistrata Readings Staged to Voice Opposition to War

Groups around the state will perform an ancient Greek play tomorrow to protest a possible war with Iraq. The Lysistrata Project spans 56 countries. Productions in New York state will happen everywhere from a community college auditorium in Plattsburgh, an art gallery in Ithaca, a mall bookstore in Syracuse, and even a cafe in Saratoga Springs. Actors in a Buffalo production include Republicans, liberals, conservatives and peace-loving patriots. Pataki Budget Proposal Angers North Country Healthcare Leaders

The North Country's medical industry is reacting with anger to Governor Pataki's budget proposals, unveiled on Wednesday. Rural hospitals and nursing homes face a possible cut in Medicaid payments - and millions of dollars in new taxes. Saranac Lake Coach Pleads Guilty To Child Sex Crime

New Local Company Wants To Fill Void Left By Ames

Small towns across the North Country are struggling to replace the Ames department stores that once anchored local economies. Until the company's bankruptcy, last fall, Ames offered basic goods like clothing and house-wares. Now, a company based in Gouverneur is hoping to start a new chain of stores called "WiseBuys" that would fill the shopping void. Saranac Lake Rally Embraces Wal-Mart

Two hundred local residents turned out in Saranac Lake last night, for what turned into a pro Wal-Mart pep rally. Some people worry that the company's big box stores would tarnish the village's rustic character and hurt small businesses. But as Brian Mann reports, most who spoke at the meeting say a Wal-Mart store would turn Saranac Lake into a regional shopping hub.  Go to full article

Schumer Courts Walmart for Tri-Lakes Region

Senator Charles Schumer is courting Walmart for the heart of the Adirondacks. In a letter last week, Schumer encouraged Walmart's CEO to look at putting in store in Saranac Lake or in the nearby village of Tupper Lake. Like many North Country communities, the two villages were home to Ames department stores, which closed this fall. State Sues Massena Woman For Pyramid Scheme

A St. Lawrence County woman stands accused of bringing a pyramid scheme to the region and duping hundreds of women out of thousands of dollars. The State Attorney General's office filed a civil suit Thursday seeking the woman's profits. David Sommerstein reports.  Go to full article
