Schumer opens NY's new utility control center

RENSSELAER, N.Y. (AP) U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer has formally opened the state's new high-tech utility control center near Albany that aims to improve the efficiency of the state's electrical grid.

The Democrat attended the official opening of the $38 million center Tuesday. Known as the New York Independent System Operator Utility Control Center, the facility is intended to better coordinate electrical production with demand.  Go to full article

Schumer presses oil companies on dangerous train tankers

While in Watertown Wednesday, Senator Chuck Schumer said the federal government is not moving fast enough to make trains carrying crude oil safer.

Schumer said volatile shipments of crude oil didn't used to be an issue in New York because there weren't many.  Go to full article

Schumer vows to fight troop reduction at Fort Drum

New York Senator Charles Schumer will be at city hall in Watertown this afternoon and says he'll fight to block any troop reduction at the nearby Fort Drum Army base.

In a statement released this morning, Schumer suggested that Army downsizing and return of the so-called "sequester" budget cutting measure in Washington could threaten troop levels at the base.  Go to full article

Delta adding flights between NYC and Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Delta Airlines is expanding its reach in upstate New York.

New York Sen. Charles Schumer says Delta will add several new flights from Syracuse to major airline hubs in 2014, including two new daily flights to JFK International Airport in New York City.  Go to full article

Hunger groups ask Schumer to block food stamp cuts

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Anti-hunger groups are calling on New York Sen. Charles Schumer to block cuts to food stamps.

Anti-hunger activists have launched a statewide campaign urging Schumer to vote against any farm bill that includes cuts in food stamp funding. They also want Schumer to push to restore recent cuts.  Go to full article

Schumer: Ambulance funding threatened

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Sen. Charles Schumer warns that ambulance crews are threatened with the loss of critical funding.

At stake is $40 million in Medicaid payments statewide used to pay for ambulance services. He says that critical funding will expire Jan. 1 if Congress doesn't act first.  Go to full article
