For Olympic families, anxiety about Sochi

In these final weeks before the Winter Olympics in Sochi, there's growing of anxiety about safety and the threat of terrorism in Russia. The state department has issued a travel advisory for Americans traveling to the games. Some athletes in the US have been urging family members to say home.

Safety fears are only the latest complication for North Country families debating whether to make the trip to Sochi.  Go to full article

Weibrecht makes US Sochi Team

Another North Country athlete has qualified for the Sochi Winter Olympics, now less than two weeks away. Over the weekend, the US ski team named Andrew Weibrecht from Lake Placid to the squad.

Weibrecht will compete in the men's downhill, super-g and supercombined. Weibrecht captured a bronze medal in super-g in 2010 in Vancouver.

In the year's since that race, Weibrecht has struggled with illness and equipment problems. In a tweet sent over the weekend, he acknowledged those problems and said being named to the team "means a lot."  Go to full article

North Country Olympic Roster Grows

The North Country's contingent of Olympians heading to the Sochi Games continues to grow.

Yesterday, coaches confirmed that Saranac Lake's Peter Frenette will be part of the roster for the long-distance ski jumping team.

Also, Vermontville native Bill Demong -- a 2010 gold medalist -- was confirmed to the Nordic combined team.  Go to full article

Freestyle aerial jumps graceful, bone-crunching

With the Sochi Winter Olympics now less than three weeks away, it was a huge pre-Olympics weekend in Lake Placid.

Skiers from all over the world gathered for the World Cup freestyle championships, which included mogul competition at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington and aerial jumping at the Olympic complex in Lake Placid.  Go to full article

Safety fears reshape Olympic sled sports

In these final weeks before the Sochi Olympics, we're previewing many of the athletes and looking at some of the stories that could shape these Winter games.

Sled-racing will be one of the most exciting events at the Olympics, as bobsled, luge and skeleton racers rocket down a winding, ice-covered track.

But the competition this year will look very different from races at the 2010 games in Vancouver. Those games were marred by the death of one athlete and by numerous crashes.

The controversy in Vancouver is still sending shock waves through the sport.  Go to full article
