Jan 04, 2002 — In 1983, the federal government delcared the land and water around GM's factory along the St. Lawrence river a Superfund Site. Cancer-causing PCBs were seeping into the earth and the river. The action identified the site as a top priority for clean-up. Almost twenty years later, the toxic landfill is still there. Oct 29, 2001 — Town leaders along the St. Lawrence River approved a settlement Friday with the New York Power Authority as a part of its bid for a new license to operate its power dam near Massena. The $115 million deal includes recreational improvements, returns of land, and payments to St. Lawrence County and its towns affected by the power project.
