Jul 01, 2005 — A radical anti-gay group from Kansas plans to picket churches in Plattsburgh this weekend. The Reverend Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church have targeted Plattsburgh because the city's popular Republican Mayor, Dan Stewart, is an openly gay man. Stewart will host the Mayor's Cup celebration this 4th of July weekend. Phelps is an extremely controversial figure. His organization has begun picketing the funerals of soldiers who die in Iraq. A press release issued by his church says, "Thank God for improvised explosive devices killing Americans in strange lands." According to Phelps, the bloodshed in Iraq and Afghanistan are God's retribution for America's tolerance of gays. Brian Mann will be covering the story this weekend. Dec 02, 2004 — Because Canada's federal government regulates drug prices, name brand medications are far cheaper north of the border. The Bush Administration -- and the American drug industry -- have worked to block re-importation of prescription drugs. The Food and Drug Administration describes the practice as illegal and unsafe. Critics say drug companies just want to protect their profits. And with tens of thousands of Americans already buying their medications north of the border, the Federal government faces growing pressure to shift its policy. Nov 01, 2004 — The supply of flu vaccine is extremely tight in the U.S. On Friday, two hundred and sixty people from Plattsburgh crossed the border in a caravan arranged by local officials. Seniors paid twenty-five dollars apiece to get their shots at a private clinic. Mar 08, 2004 — In recent weeks, Plattsburgh Mayor Dan Stewart has found himself in the middle of a national debate over gay marriage. Stewart is a Republican, but he's also gay and says same-sex marriages should be legal. He discussed the issue with NPR's Madeleine Brand and with Bruce Steel, editor of the gay magazine "The Advocate". Apr 01, 2003 — Canada's ambassador to the U-S says "emotional" times have strained relations between the two countries. Speaking Monday at Plattsburgh State University, Ambassador Michael Kergin defended Canada's decision not to support the Invasion of Iraq. But that stance angered the Bush Administration and may complicate trade talks. As Brian Mann reports, the international tension is being felt most sharply in towns along the border.
